Blevins Joins The Gravy Train

Filed in Delaware by on January 11, 2017

Sigh. Though former State Senate Pro Tempore Patricia Blevins may be somewhat qualified for the executive director of the state Office of Animal Welfare, this just stinks of the Delaware Way. From the Delaware Online article: “The state conducted a national search to replace Brown, a former Delaware state director for the Humane Society of the United States.” And the person found was a retired Delaware State Senator. Give me a break.

Hettie Brown was an extremely talented and brilliant animal welfare professional.
No credible national search would get you a defeated state senator from Elsmere.

  2. mediawatch says:

Not that Carney wouldn’t have hired her, but having Gov. Jack make the appointment a week before he leaves office compounds the impression of favoritism.
If we’re in the mood for finding jobs for defeated elected officials, maybe former Senator Patti can hire former NCC Executive Tom Gordon as chief dogcatcher. As a former police chief, he’s got the credentials.

  3. Jason330 says:

    LOL.

Also… No job for the defeated Insurance Commish?

  4. Steve Newton says:

To be fair she’s been running a small animal welfare charity in Delaware for years.

To be realistic, she’s also used her position in the Senate to insure that her particular private charity was supported by hundreds of thousands of tax dollars over the same years.

If you wonder why so many people find it so hard to oppose Trump, consider that he’s probably bought the trademark for “the Delaware Way” because its fits so well.

  5. You knew she was getting something.

That the pols don’t even try to pretend that this was anything more than blatant patronage tells you that they view the public with total disdain.

  6. mediawatch says:

Patti could put KWS in charge of approving pet insurance policies sold to Delaware residents.

  7. She’s always had that ‘little business on the side’. Delaware Helpline became the official/unofficial helpline for the State of Delaware under her stewardship, and Girls Inc. always got some real nice state funding while she was there.

Don’t get depressed. Get angry and then channel that anger into action.

  8. chris says:

It rubs salt in the wound when state folks claim they conducted a “national search.”

  9. Anono says:

    Typical, the Delaware Way!!

  10. mediawatch says:

Maybe we’ll need a FOIA request to determine the extent of the “national search”: where and when the ads were placed, who was contacted, etc.
In their minds, posting an ad on craigslist might constitute a national search.

  11. Jim C says:

I think KWS has been working on the behalf of the pet insurance companies for years already! Ever actually price one of those policies and see how little you get for your money?

  12. RE Vanella says:

This is sort of like all those corporate donors for this governor’s coronation shindig. Perfect Delaware story. All the regular bullshit at 1/20 scale.

  13. The ‘national search’ meme is especially laughable when we have someone truly special like Jane Pierantozzi of Faithful Friends right here in Delaware. I’m thinking the Craig’s List ‘search’ might be close to the truth.

  14. A Little Bird says:

She literally created this job for herself. She was the sponsor on the resolution that established the taskforce which resulted in the Office of Animal Welfare. This is getting ridiculous and it’s about time people start voicing their displeasure with these types of moves.

The Republicans are already using this as an issue in the special election. A press release went out today from the Marino campaign slamming this insider deal.
Real bright for Jack Markell and Dems to make this move NOW! This is the kind of stuff that costs you in special elections.

  16. Well, that bill was passed quite a while ago. I’m sure she didn’t anticipate being in this position.

As to the Special Election, this is what R’s do. Even if there was nothing, they’d invent something.

But thanks for passing along the talking points.

  17. jason330 says:

The ability to create six figure sinecures for themselves is why people run for the Senate.

  18. SussexWatcher says:

A godamned embarrassment. What the hell was Markell thinking? This is a slap in the face to real state employees. Hope Carney doesn’t let this go forward. The only consolation is that Blevins will also feel pain when her former colleagues fuck with the state health insurance plans.

There should be a one-year cooling-off period for former lawmakers working for the state. Sean Lynn, can you sponsor that? Thanks.
