We Are That Nation Now
President Trump issued an executive order that suspended entry from Muslim countries and added religious tests giving Christians and other minority religions priority over Muslim people.
President Trump on Friday closed the nation’s borders to refugees from around the world, ordering that families fleeing the slaughter in Syria be indefinitely blocked from entering the United States, and temporarily suspending immigration from several predominantly Muslim countries.
In an executive order that he said was part of an extreme vetting plan to keep out “radical Islamic terrorists,” Mr. Trump also established a religious test for refugees from Muslim nations: He ordered that Christians and others from minority religions be granted priority over Muslims.
The United States has always been far from perfect. But today, with a stroke of a pen, Donald Trump has destroyed the idea of what is is to be an American. The shame I feel.
You’re right. We are a different country today than we were yesterday.
This needs to be challenged constantly.
When you put that action together with the upcoming “First Amendment Defense Act,” which will legalize virtually any level of discrimination against LGBTQ Americans, we are not just “that nation,” we’re starting to resemble an abused family, cut off from the outside world and battered in the home.
But we don’t have to be.
We ARE the United States, not them. The US can be known not for what the Killer Orange Clown does, but for how we oppose him.
After one week of the orange puck and the US can no longer claim to be the leader of the free world. The home of the brave has been replaced by yellow-bellied chickens who hide behind walls and are afraid of children. One week down 207 weeks to go!

Hundreds of people at JFK this afternoon, vigil planned for 6 pm. One of the Iraqis being detained has been released. He has a special immigrant visa, part of the program to allow people to immigrate to the US after helping US armed forces in war zones. Because they are in danger. For helping US armed forces. What kind of an idiot would bar these people from coming to the US. Oh. right.
Chris Coons did release a statement on this. But a friend rightly questioned why a special session of Congress hasn’t been called. He thinks that a president signing orders that have not been vetted by any government agency means we’re in a Constitutional crisis.
Judging from my week gone by, at the very least, the election of this dope has caused a huge drop in national productivity.
Our treatment of translators has been deplorable.
What has at a minimum been lurking in the American conscious has now surfaced and has dangerous power. It’s the American system that has created this venom, and its failure is exemplified in the actual election to the presidency of someone like Donald Trump.
Opposition is fine as long as the opposed person is swayable. Donald Trump’s narcissistic ego swayable? Sorry, but that’s la la land.
We ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait until he starts killing people…
What if the free world responded to our ban on Muslims with a ban on US travelers?
@DeLefty: What if some country decided to put that idea in front of the United Nations?
How does that seasoned diplomat Nikki “we’re taking names” Haley argue Trump’s case?
I was heartened to see the Governors of WA and VA, NY congresspeople and mayors out at airports and on the airwaves making strong statements and working to get innocent people out of airport holding.
Then I wondered, where is John Carney?
He made a facebook statement, but didn’t take any action, or threaten any.
What can and should our governor do? Let’s start calling and get him to DO something.
Keep calling Carney’s office. They are starting to get to know my voice
For years Americans have been losing our jobs, losing our standard of living, losing our pensions… and this is what makes us finally come out to protest? I guess the frog in the kettle is finally saying “Is it hot in here or is it just me?”
Oh well, if it brings Trump down I’ll take it.
Reprising my Nixon years by answering the phone with a cheery “Impeach the president!”. And writing protest songs in my off hours.
