Chris Coons–Maybe Worse Than Carper
Do you all have your phones handy? Today would be a very good day to flood Sen. Chris Coons’ office with irate phone calls. Why?
Sen. Chris Coons, D-Delaware, a member of the Judiciary Committee told CNN he is still seething over the Republicans’ decision to block Judge Merrick Garland from filling the seat when they refused to hold hearings and votes on his nomination last year.
“But I’m not going to do to President Trump’s nominee what the Republicans in the Senate did to President Obama’s,” Coons said. “I will push for a hearing and I will push for a vote.
Other Democrats privately agreed with that sentiment.
No. He says he’s angry that the moderate nominee of a legitimate president wasn’t considered. But, of course, that’s no reason not to consider the right wing nominee of a Fascist who is trying to destroy the independence of the judiciary.
What the fuck is WRONG with this guy? He needs to hear from all of us that this cannot be countenanced. Forget about waiting until 2020. This has to be stopped now.
For those of you who don’t have his office on speed-dial:
Wilmington: (302) 573-6345
Dover: (302) 736-5601
D. C.: (202) 224-5042.
Just. DO it!
This is an outrage. If Coons breaks a Dem filibuster, it is so on.
Here we go.
Wilmington office just told me that Coons will be withholding consent. So they are in disarray, or he changed his mind.
Keep the calls going.
Lawless White House > Popular vote loser > Withhold consent.
That’s a sneaky term. He could ‘pull a Carper’ and vote in favor of an ‘up or down vote’ and then vote against the nominee.
Doesn’t matter if he ‘withholds consent’ on the vote if there are enough R’s in line. What matters is that it never comes to a vote.
The fluff piece on Coons, “8 politicians who will make you feel good about politics”, is a great example of this.
So I called DC office. I said it seems like now the senator is withholding consent. I said I don’t care what procedural term is used, and I don’t care what the specific issue is or nominee, but the senator needs to get on board with the resistance because people are paying very close attention.
‘Withhold consent’ is a carefully-crafted lawyerly bullshit term. His ‘consent’ must be withheld in the Judiciary Committee meeting and/or any vote to break the filbuster.
Voting ‘no’ against the nominee on an up-or-down vote means nothing.
This is the same crap that Carper pulled with Alito and Roberts. Voted to break the filibuster, then voted no on the vote. Breaking the filibuster was tantamount to assuring their confirmation.
Called the DC office b/c all the lines were busy at the Wilmington office.
Told them that he had to oppose Trump’s nominee in committee and oppose breaking the filibuster. I could almost hear the aide’s eyes rolling. But she took my name and thanked me.
Keep it up!
That’s funny. I think I spoke to the same woman in the DC office. She’s had it with us. 🙂
I called DC office… woman I spoke with said she “believed” Coons didn’t plan to filibuster. I told her that was unacceptable and Coons needed to join the Democratic filibuster. She “thanked me for my opinion” but didn’t take my name.
There’s a Daily Kos diary up now recommending people call Coons even if they don’t live in DE. I got a busy signal a few times before I got through.
This would be a really good moment for groups like Network Delaware and Delaware United to activate their memberships to call Coons within the next few hours.
Puck, ya GOTTA give them your name. Calls from constituents is their coin of the realm.
But you’re right. C’mon Delaware United & Network Delaware, make those calls! And give ’em your name. (Betcha that a lot of their members are doing just that!)
I love how he grows his ethics and chops them down to suit his needs at the moment.
How this guy got an ethics degree is beyond me. He’s the most self-serving “ethical” man I’ve ever met who wasn’t wearing a preacher’s costume.
Coons–lots of double talk. Typical politician.
The real impressive young guy in Senate is Chris Murphy from Connecticut.
I did give my name and said I was a Delaware voter. But my name isn’t one that you can spell after one hearing. So I know she didn’t write it down. Next time I’ll insist they take my name and contact info.
You guys got your wish: Delaware United is going to send out an email tomorrow morning urging our peeps to make a call to Coons’ office.
Great, Josh. Looks like the Trump nominee is a ‘more collegial’ Antonin Scalia.
He. Must. Be. Stopped.
I remember when his mother was charged with destroying the EPA for Reagan. The turd doesn’t fall too far from the asshole, I suppose.
This is who Alby is referencing:

Another fox in charge of the henhouse.
A 4/4 Supreme Court sounds great to me for the next 4 years as opposed to giving the assholes a majority. The next Supreme Court justice deserves to come to come from a President who has earned the majority of the popular vote. The people need to be heard!
“Delaware United is going to send out an email tomorrow morning urging our peeps to make a call to Coons’ office.”
Good job. Now for Network Delaware – or are they focused on their five-year plan?
I, for one, cant wait for Roberts to be legacy minded again and hand drumpf defeat after defeat.
Grolsch (or whatever his name is) maintains balance…. If it were him and not scalia the ACA decision and marriage equality decisions would have been the same.
We should be focused on sacrificing young healthy people’s organs to RBG.
