Help needed. I haven’t seen Senator Coons’ rationale for his “present, not voting” stance on Tillerson’s confirmation. Where is his purported rationale? I want more info before calling his office. Thanks.
Best to call the office and ask them directly. Any answer other than “president bannon said he would give me the antidote” is unacceptable.
Thanks, Ben. I called Coons’ Wilm. office and line busy. Called Dover and spoke with a Desiree who said Coons was NOT present for the vote, had “ducked out” to be at Dover AFB (with Trump for arrival of SEAL’s body). Desiree said Coons would have voted No had he been present, that he had voted No in committee. She reiterated that he had been present “all day” but then ducked out and WASN’T present for the vote. She also said I was the first one who had asked the question.
A Politico piece yesterday named both Tom Carper and Chris Coons among the most likely Democrats to vote to break the filibuster. They called Carper a “deferential Democrat” (pointing out that he voted for cloture on Alito in 2006) and Coons a “swing voter”.
Most of the rest of their list is Democrats from red states up for re-election in 2018.

I will also mention this when I stop by Coons’ Wilmo office. And maybe hit Carper’s on the way back.
If even one Democrat wants to filibuster all must stand in solidarity.
I personally am okay with Tester, Heidikamp, Manchin and possibly McCaskill and Donnelley voting for closure. Honestly they are in tough spots, and 43 is still plenty. But i wouldn’t be suprised if some of them decided picking a fight is the way to go. Gotta think Trump craters enough in 20 months not to hurt them too bad. Everyone else. no way…and the fact that Coons and Carper are even mentioned should embarrass us all. Hell, even Bob Casey is talking tough.
