Just because I don’t have the stomach for it, and don’t get along with some who do, that doesn’t mean I root against people trying to change the Delaware Democratic Party from the inside. They’re doing work I never could and I salute them for it.
mcbride is hardly trying to change the party from the inside. she’s a mouthpiece for “politics as usual” and seems to live quite comfortably as a result.
That doesn’t seem fair. Sarah McBride has worked tirelessly and has accomplished a lot.

I’m not sure where you’re coming from with this. Sarah is an LGBTQ activist. She has always worked on these issues. How does what she’s done count against her? Should she have not worked on LGBTQ issues because some Dems would “put on a show”?

Nothing counts against her. I have a problem with the corporatist dems in Delaware using her as window dressing while they promote staunchly conservative economic policies.
That’s the trick of the Democratic party establishment, support fringe social issues then vote with republican conservatives on issues where they are owned by corporate piggies
I mean I’m all for fringe liberal social issues, but they shouldn’t be the face of the party above all else.

Anyway, Delle Donne is arguably the best female basketball player in the world, and has been for some time. It’s Elena for my money.

As for McBrides in the Delaware Democratic Party, Sarah is not the one who’s the problem, IMO.
McBride wasn’t in “Meet the Fockers” that’s a plus.
As for the “giving cover to business as usual Dems” I’d be curious to hear her o that topic. I get that she is doing a job which entails being nice to a bunch of politicians, but I wonder if the one issue thing is ever a problem.
At the risk of pissing off a lot of friends, I’m very disappointed that so many people who are committed to LGBTQ issues don’t stand up for the other elements of a progressive agenda. It resulted in Jack Markell getting close to a pass on economic and education policy, for example, b/c he was the guy who helped make gay marriage law.
It resulted in some ‘leaders’ of that community supporting Bryon Short, who may well be to the right of the Chamber of Commerce on economic issues.
While I think that the progress all of us, including our bloggers here at DL, have fought for when it comes to equal rights for all has been absolutely essential, it shouldn’t come at the expense of progressive economic policies and at the expense of the 99%. It’s time for leaders in the LGBTQ community to fight for economic justice as well. So far, too many have not joined that fight.
It’s funny that everyone is forgetting that Delle Donne is a member of the LGBT community as well as doing a lot of work for special needs people. That’s forgetting about all the Delaware girls Delle Donne has inspired. But I guess that’s the Delaware Way.

I think Delle Donne is wonderful, too. I think both of these young women have accomplished amazing things through hard work and dedication. Both have done far more to improve the world than many of us.
Is there some rule that LGBT advocates also have to be progressive activists? I think not. All progressives are LGBT advocates, but not all LGBT advocates are progressives.
I didn’t forget anything. And I voted for Aubrey Plaza, mainly because I didn’t realize we would be judged on our votes.
Of course it’s not a rule. But if you’re going to build a vibrant liberal/progressive alternative to Third Wayism, it would be great if allies on one issue stuck together on other issues.
Otherwise, it’s “Thanks for your support. See ya, I’ve got mine.”
To me, justice should not be a selective convenience, but rather something that all of our citizens deserve. I’d like to think that philosophy extends to those with whom we presumably have much in common. I’d be disappointed if I were wrong.
Don’t usually comment, but I did hear her speak at UD at a Haven event and I now follow her on social media. She posts a lot about LGBT issues obviously, but she does speak out a good bit on BLM, death penalty, health care, economic justice, and immigration issues.
based on what I heard at UD, she is definitely progressive in her views across the board. I can’t speak to her support for Markell or other Delaware dems, although as others have commented she’s probably trying to navigate a delicate situation as an activist who is trying to work with these people. I definitely get the impression that she is trying to change the party from within. it seemed like she believes in more fundamental change and that these issues are all tied.
For the record, I did not forget Delle Donne was gay. I didn’t think it was relevant. But yeah her charity work should be mentioned. And quite frankly, although it sounds quaint, she’s tight with her family. Which is cool. It’s sort of all connected.
Plus she passed on the big UConn thing to make her name from the home office.

I have a longstanding desire to see Wilmington honor Aubrey Plaza by naming one of its public spaces Aubrey Plaza Plaza. I don’t have anything comparable for Elena.
Can’t we just like and admire as many of them as we want? All of them are making Delaware look good to the outside world.
