All Eyes on Carper and Coons

Filed in National by on March 22, 2017

It is very simple. If they vote to invoke cloture… to close the Senate debate on the nomination of Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, they are voting for the validation of this President and this Presidency. They are voting to validate the Republican strategy of stealing a Supreme Court nomination from President Obama. They are voting to legitimize and normalize the Russian intervention in our political system.

They are putting a black mark on their respective records. A black mark that they must never be allowed to live down.

  1. Yes. Everyone must contact these guys. Schumer gave them the perfect fig leaf yesterday when he argued that the Senate shouldn’t even be considering this nomination when the very legitimacy of this administration is in doubt.

Carper and Coons could vote against cloture while still retaining their squishy-soft ‘reaching across the aisle’ BS by saying that this is not a partisan issue, but a question about whether this is a legitimate presidency. They can then say they’ll revisit the issue with an open mind once the investigation(s) have been completed.

At which point, I predict, that Trump will no longer be president.

Will be interesting how these two vote…… Carper is afraid of a challenge from the left in 2018 so I assume he will vote No. Coons is probably impressed with Gorsuch’s intellect and probably could vote to confirm to look bipartisan. But he will feel the pressure too. We shall see… Baring any bombshells today, I think Gorsuch will likely cobble together 52 R’s and 8 D’s of the 48 D’s for confirmation.

You are full of predictions this morning. I hope they pan out, or we’ll have to start calling you DelawareDem.

  4. Ben says:

You dont think Mitchy will just nuke the filibuster? Republicans must know they cant hope to hold power for very long. Removing all roadblocks to their agenda seems to be their only path at this point.

  5. He’s either gonna try to nuke the filibuster at some point, or continue to have enough D’s roll over. And there are some R’s who realize that they could be screwed down the line when D’s are in power, so it’s not even a slam-dunk that he would succeed. If he tries to do it on Gorsuch, the issue of the illegitimacy of this administration will only be reinforced.

There’s a political price to be paid for nuking the filibuster, just as there must be a political price for D’s to pay if they roll over on this.

“We’re afraid that he’ll nuke the filibuster” is as pathetic defense as one could muster. How about doing something b/c it’s the right thing to do?

  6. Ben says:

Like living in PA and voting for Tofu Palin, b/c voting for Clinton out of fear is a pathetic defense? … just sayin.

  7. puck says:

On the same day Schumer announced a Gorsuch filibuster, Coons is reportedly trying to cut a deal with Mitch McConnell for his vote to break the Dem filibuster. Politico:

The deal Democrats would be most likely to pursue, the sources said, would be to allow confirmation of Gorsuch in exchange for a commitment from Republicans not to kill the filibuster for a subsequent vacancy during President Donald Trump’s term…. Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) is one of the senators seeking a solution that would avoid the nuclear option, two Democratic sources said.

  8. RE Vanella says:

Coincidentally, guess who’s getting a personal visit from yours truly tomorrow? I have arranged to bring a friend as well and deliver a written message re: this situation.

Also, if Mr Coons determines for some reason to roll over rather than fight a bully the plaza outside 1105 N Market St can easily accommodate a hundred or so people. So start thinking about joining a demonstration on a nice spring afternoon in the very near future.

  9. jason330 says:

OMG – Something for a promise (from Republicans) to not do something in the future? If Coons cuts that deal he is the stupidest motherfucker in the Senate.

  10. puck says:

Coons is setting himself up to vote Yes for cloture but No on the nomination, as his spokesman’s quote indicates. Fuck that cowardly shit.

    From Politico:

Coons is “open about his concern for preserving the filibuster and the impact this process may have on the Senate, and he has talked with both Republican and Democratic senators about that. At the same time, he remains concerned about the approach Judge Gorsuch would bring to the Court,” said spokesman Sean Coit.

  11. Joe Laux says:

This is the kind of thinking one would expect from the likes of Manchin or McCaskill, who represent red states, but NOT someone like Coons from a solid blue state that overwhelmingly repudiated Comrade Trump last year.
What is Coons thinking? What good does a ‘No’ vote do on the actual nomination in a Senate that is controlled by the Republicans??? Gorsuch is a proven enemy of the LGBT community, women, and minorities, and has no place on the US Supreme Court.
I would like to see Rep. Rochester come out and urge her Senate counterparts to support the filibuster and oppose Gorsuch on all levels. If she showed that kind of backbone, I could only see good things for her if she chose to exchange her 2 year House term for a 6 year Senate stint in 2018 or 2020.
