Memorial Day

Filed in National by on May 29, 2017

We live in a country that indulges in a lot of pomp and celebration around veterans both dead and alive. If you’ve gone to any major league baseball game, or NFL contest in the past ten years you know what I’m talking about. Celebrating veterans and waving the flag is a national pastime. Funding veterans programs, helping combat vets with PTSD…not so much. We like the idea of veterans, not the bum veterans grubbing for services.

Similarly, we love the idea of the Constitution. The actual Constitution, oh we’ve heard of it. Does it having any standing in a country in which the President’s son in law is above the law? I don’t think so, but we’ll see.

This time next year we’ll know if the Constitution still holds sway. We’ll know if the founder’s work was durable enough to stand up to the ongoing assaults that Republicans have in store for it. So enjoy your summer, but be ready to go. This is the watershed moment. Are we worthy of our inheritance? Do we have the courage and guts of our forefathers and foremothers? Time will tell.

20 combat veterans commit suicide EVERY DAY, but can we get funding for veteran programs? Don’t hold your breath.

Said veterans always vote heavy for the Republicans, and the Republicans pay no price for killing programs and funds for the veterans either. Question: If the vets can’t help themselves what are we supposed to do about it? Having said that I’m surprised the Republicans, and for that matter the Dems, have taken a break from beating the war drum in Washington. But I’m sure it’s coming.

Populist shares a root with popular. You almost can’t blame nit wits like Tom Kline and other dupes and marks for voting for the GOP. Until Democrats figure out how to make their brand of corporatist gray goo more popular, Americans of all stripes will continue to vote for their undoing.

We can sure be thankful that previous administration gave a shit about vets.
