Black Friday Open Thread

Filed in National, Open Thread by on November 24, 2017 0 Comments

Black Friday isn’t called that because stores get “into the black” from all the retail shopping — it was coined by Philly cops in the 1960s to describe their day-after-Thanksgiving, when they had to work 12-hour shifts to handle the traffic (all the department stores were in the city then; there were no malls). Henry […]

Sussex County, Alabama

Filed in National by on November 24, 2017 6 Comments

Is Sussex County the Alabama of Delaware? It’s not hard to make the case. Years before Roy Moore’s love of…um, purity hit the news, Sussex produced pious hypocrite Vance Phillips, who groomed his target until she turned 18 before destroying his life, and a good bit of hers, in pursuit. Another candidate for public office, […]

1. 1982 Called. They Want Their AG Election Back. Faced with the possibility of having either a pro- marijuana legalization candidate (David Skoranski) or a ‘nut’ (Tom Neuberger), as one party flak put it, the R’s are rumored to be pushing for Richard Gebelein to be their AG candidate.  If the D’s nominate Charles Oberly,  […]

Since I’m not Captain Obvious, or at least, try not to be, I’m skipping the obvious (not that the obvious is bad or anything) to go with this adrenaline rush of a song:

Turkey Day Open Thread

Filed in National by on November 23, 2017 2 Comments

There’s something remarkable about that bird you’re going to eat today — it’s twice the weight of its ancestors of 50 years ago. Turkeys in 1960 averaged just over 16 pounds at slaughter. Today’s average 31 pounds. It’s the result of genetic engineering, but not the laboratory kind. It’s simple animal husbandry, the sort of […]

Carper pulled the old “we’ve got a bad line” trick on Trump

This is a good/news bad news story. The good news is that Carper recognizes that the President is an idiot. The bad news is that Carper was trying to get rid of the moron so that the grownup corporation loving centrists could find “middle ground” on the GOP’s horrible tax cuts for millionaires scheme.

Lord only knows what hell will be unleashed on the middle class when that “middle ground” is discovered.

Here’s a shocker — Donald Trump supports Roy Moore. After days of silence on the matter, Trump must have figured out that he and ol’ Roy are attracted to the same thing — young girls (remember when Trump looked at a 12-year-old and said he’d be dating her in a few years?). Plus Trump loves […]

Paul Baumbach on the Shortage of Trade School Grads

Filed in National by on November 21, 2017 19 Comments

Put the Vocational and Technical back into Vo-Tech. In my district, the Vo-tech school is treated by many parents as another college prep charter school. Part of the problem, nationally and in Delaware, is that the Congress expanded their definition of what a vo-tech school can teach, and as a result some (nationally and in […]

Open Thread Nov. 21: Sex and Politics Don’t Mix

With liberals arguing over Al Franken, Bill Clinton and the political power of opposing sexual harassment, here’s a reminder that Republicans’ Roy Moore problem, which is only partly about sexual harassment, remains a problem. Both Steve Bannon and the White House have vacillated about their strategy, and the result has been silence from Ol’ Stumpy […]
