The Last Christmas of the American Democracy

Filed in National by on December 16, 2017

It sounds odd to the ears, but the stage is being set. Bob Mueller is going to be fired. All investigations into President Trump’s connections Russia will be concluded. Republicans will cheer, Democrats will hiss. When the dust settles, the President will be above the law, and untouchable. Then we’ll be not the America of legend, but America II. The same Stars and Stripes will fly over the same buildings, but the flag will mean something altogether different from what it once meant, and the “of the people, for the people, by the people” buildings will be hollow shells.

Christmas.1

The only thing one can do now is prepare.

Mass demonstrations are planned immediately in the event Mueller is sacked.

If he is fired before 2pm eastern the actions all begin at 5pm the same day. After 2pm the demonstrations start at noon the following day.

Sign up for one of these and, if this turn is taken, get your fucking feet in the street. I don’t plan on taking it lying down and you shouldn’t either.

I’m much more of an optimist than the doom and gloomers, whatever side they may be on, but I have to admit that I’m not as optimistic about our nation as I have always been in the past. It’s not just the Mueller investigation. It’s generally everything, but especially the pervasive extreme tribalism that has invaded our society. When Nazism becomes acceptable, we as a nation and society have sunk to the lowest point I can remember in lifetime. I struggle to remain hopeful, but my hope weakens a bit every day and the best I can seem to achieve these days is simply to avoid being nasty. I hate it when I start to have low expectations of myself. We desperately need to have conservations with each other, but we don’t even speak the same language anymore. Maybe we never did, but everyone seems to be so triggered, it’s almost not worth trying to have a dialogue. I hope that the Mueller is allowed to proceed to it’s logical conclusion, regardless of where it leads. Hope is supposed to spring eternal, but I’m kinda thinking that it needs to be watered occasionally in order to grow.
