Rep. Melanie George Smith to Retire

Filed in National by on January 25, 2018

El Som’s “Mo Better Democrats” is turning into Treasure Island’s Black Spot. We can hope so anyway. Per BlueDelaware Rep Melanie George-Smith to retire.

State Representative Melanie George Smith, who has faced controversy recently over her residency, or lack thereof, in the 5th Representative District that she has been representing for over 16 years, has announced on the House floor that she is retiring at the end of her current term. She had been frustrated with the budget process after last year’s protracted budget fight, and had had some friction with Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf regarding her chairmanship of the Joint Finance Committee. There is no word yet on whether any of these considerations played into her decision to retire.

Where’d she get a job? You know she’s going somewhere cushy

  2. Well, she didn’t get that judgeship she wanted. Um, there’s always a VP spot at Del-Tech with her family name on it…

I’m sure she’ll scrape by. She won’t have the expense of renting a room in her district anymore.

@Arthur: From the News Journal story:

The eight-term state representative said her employer Richards Layton & Finger made her a “generous offer” to work full-time “at a salary that would enable me to provide for my children’s future.”

She was making a boatload working there part time at Richards Layton… Money is not an issue here.

  7. I agree. Involuntary retirement was the issue.
