The incumbent Secretary of Labor, who has been acting Secretary Of Labor under John Carney largely b/c one state senator has held up her nomination, has taken a new gig at Delaware State University as Dean of Graduate, Adult And Continuing Studies, according to this WDEL report. While it’s possible that Patrice Gilliam-Johnson would have […]

Open Thread Jan. 11: Stumbling Through the Fog

Filed in Delaware, National, Open Thread by on January 11, 2018 7 Comments

Donald Trump’s mental fog was on display again this morning, when a “Fox & Friends” story about government surveillance prompted him to tweet against his own policy. This is what I mean by his decline making it impossible for him to finish his term. Propping up a derelict president only works if the president in […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thurs., Jan. 11, 2018

You may have seen that President Pro-Tempore Dave McBride has provided a room in Legislative Hall for lobbyists.   I generally support the move, although I doubt that it will have the desired effect.  McBride’s goal is to minimize lobbyists’ presence throughout the Hall.  While it will have some impact, there’s a reason why they’re called […]

Song Of The Day: Jan. 11, 2018

You’ve heard of the Friends Of Distinction, but likely haven’t properly appreciated them.  They’re responsible for gems such as ‘Going In Circles’ and ‘Love Or Let Me Be Lonely’. This was the flip side of ‘Grazin’ In the Grass’. Agent Double O Soul loves the lush production. I love the vocal by Jessica Cleaves.  An […]

Open Thread Jan. 10: First Syllable, Rhymes With ‘Thumb’

Filed in National by on January 10, 2018 12 Comments

You have to wonder how long the charade can continue. Is there anybody left — besides Trump himself — who still thinks that he’s a mastermind, a genius whose tweets mean anything beyond demonstrating that this is a guy with a big ego, a big mouth and not much going on upstairs? Anyone left who […]

Maybe not Fox, but Bannon will end up on some craven network

Maybe not Fox, but Bannon will end up on some craven network

I’ve lost my taste for running “fantasy polls” but if I was running one, I’d pick CNN. Shortly after Steve Bannon became a free agent, Fox News quickly shot down any notion that he would join the network. “Fox News will not be hiring Steve Bannon,” a Fox News Channel spokesperson said in a statement […]

General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Weds., Jan. 10, 2018

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on January 10, 2018 4 Comments

Here is yesterday’s quote unquote Activity Report.  Let’s see…Ruth Briggs King carrying the Koch Brothers’ water on prevailing wage? Check.  Pushing the cannabis report back until the end of February? Check. Pushing the School Consolidation Report back until the middle of May? Check.   In a Bizarro Universe, some would call this progress. Not much in […]

BREAKING: Sussex County Council Defeats Right-To-Work Ordinance

Filed in Delaware by on January 9, 2018 5 Comments

Looks like the Koch Brothers will need to up the ante: http://www.wdel.com/news/sussex-county-council-votes-against-right-to-work-ordinance/article_e687391a-f564-11e7-9c7f-4b076b3677f5.html 4-1 with only Arlett voting yes.  But the no votes were largely driven by a legal opinion, not b/c anyone in Sussex County experienced a change of heart.

Open Thread Jan. 9: Bad Ideas Abound

Filed in National by on January 9, 2018 11 Comments

Why not Oprah? Lots of reasons, but three of them are named Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and Jenny McCarthy. Of all the many reasons to oppose such an idea, her ready embrace of a parade of charlatans is the one that perhaps should give us the most pause. Republicans don’t have the luxury of looking […]

Delaware General Assembly Pre-Game Show: Tuesday, January 9, 2018

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on January 9, 2018 26 Comments

I’ll save the ‘unfinished business’ threads for others.  Here.  Here.  And…oh, never mind, the News Journal didn’t bother. Neither the House nor the Senate has an agenda today. Which gives me plenty of time to talk about three issues important to me and, I hope, to you. 1. Carney To Do The Right Thing.  According […]
