This Thom Hartmann essay is getting a lot of traction on the liberal web, and rightly so. It lays out the entire 44-year history of how conservatives fought back against the New Deal by deciding that they could play Santa Claus, too — not by offering government assistance to the poor and middle classes, but by offering tax cuts for the rich.
The bottom line is simple: Conservatives don’t look at social programs and see government helping people. They see the other party bribing voters — because that’s how their brains work. THEY WORSHIP MONEY. If you don’t believe me, listen to a conservative talk about “The Economy” and you can easily draw the parallels to an unseen, unknowable God who makes demands of His Subjects.
