Song Of The Day: March 4, 2018
Harvey Schmidt died this week. Who? Along with lyricist Tom Jones (not that Tom Jones), Schmidt was a composer for several musical theatre productions, including The Fantasticks, the longest-running show of all-time. The show’s opening number has become a classic. Here it is, sung by the person who originated the role back in 1960. You may also remember him as Lennie Briscoe:
Younger readers might remember him from his voice role in “Beauty and the Beast,” where he played the candlestick Lumiere.
I saw him on Broadway as the gleefully unethical lawyer Billy Flynn in ‘Chicago’. He was perfect.
