I saw Dick Dale at the 8×10 in Baltimore about 20 years ago. Out of the thousands of shows I’ve attended that show was by far the loudest.
Sonny Landreth holds that dubious distinction for me. Great player, but too loud.
Surf set the stage for the age of insane loud bands, Dick Dale in particular. There were no vocals and no PA system, everything came off stage. Dale was famous for blowing up amps so Fender came up with the 100 watt Showman amp head and a two 15″ speaker cabinet to go with it. If you’ve ever hear this rig cranked up it is indeed awesome and loud as hell, right on up there with a Marshall stack. Dick Dale is still out there, still gigging in his 70’s but in bad shape with cancer. Truly he is the father of surf and one hell of an iron man. Sad day for the guitar world when he passes.
