America is a Mass Shooting Incident
14 people were shot and killed yesterday in America. There have been three shootings (one fatal) this morning so far. So, we’ll probably get over 10 again today.
There are some simple things that most of us do to avoid being shot. I mentioned a big one yesterday – be white. Here is the list, I’ve compiled so far:
– Be White
– Don’t buy a gun, or accept one as a present
– Don’t live in the South
– Have money
– If you or someone in your family needs mental health treatment, get it.
– Don’t take part in petty/street crimes. (Large scale fraud is fine. As a rule of thumb, don’t commit the types of crimes poor people commit against each other.)
Take these basic steps to avoid being shot to death. Be safe out there today.
Also – no fatal shootings in Delaware for 44 days!! Awesome, job everybody. Let’s keep this streak alive.
also:
dont live in a city
dont live in alaska
have a job
Gey your head of of your 1970’s cartoon vision of cities. Rural/Urban doesn’t hold up anymore as a stat.
Median income is a much better predictor.
Take Delaware for example. Since April 22 there have been 5 non-fatal incedents in 4 communities: Dover, Wilmington, Selbyville, and Magnolia.
Even if you count Dover as a “City” on a per capita basis – the poor, low population density areas are much more dangerous.
Alaska is #1 in terms of death by firearm per 100,000 population.
No permit is required for the purchase of a firearm, and it is depressing as all fuck. Suicide was the leading cause of gun deaths – the main factor in more than 80%.
Regionally – The South is the king of places to be shot in America.
@j “Rural/Urban doesn’t hold up anymore as a stat.”
No.. It does. Rural is far more dangerous on a per capita basis.
My favorite list item (not listed above) is — Foreign travel !
Just spend several weeks of every year abroad… and somewhere without guns (which is nearly everywhere), and you’ll be safer.
I feel far safer in Seoul or Nagoya than I do in any American city…
I even feel safer in places like Belgrade and Gdansk.
thats a good one “own a passport”. but it really overlaps with “don’t live in the South”

Don’t live in the south? No problem! Would not go there on a bet. Don’t own a gun? Also not a problem as my goal is to be on the NRA Enemies list. Don’t live in Alaska? Cool, Sarah Palin can keep it. As for foreign travel I’m all for it, however my wallet and circumstances are not. Bummer, guess Paris will have to wait another year.
Yet Alaska is on the highest end of both per capita death by firearm (according to Jason) and per capita passport holders (according to that map)
The limits of statistics. Alaska is outlier on gun deaths because of all the suicides. I don’t know how to explain the passport ownership.
@j “I don’t know how to explain the passport ownership.”
Because people who live in Alaska like to go somewhere else, especially in winter. It’s either that or shooting yourself…
And in order to do any interstate travel by car (or, I guess, snow machine) you have to go through Canada. There are plenty of places where the closest hospital is in the great white north.
@lg “And in order to do any interstate travel by car (or, I guess, snow machine) you have to go through Canada.”
Almost no one actually does that. There are only two border crossings from Canada to the large part of Alaska, and they are very lightly used.
Don’t be in a gang
