June 24 Open Thread: No Dinner For Sarah
Most people prefer simple narratives to complex ones, which is why Nicholas Sparks sells a lot more novels than, say, David Foster Wallace. It’s also why, amid the falling debris of Festung America, people have fastened onto the story of a small-town Virginia restaurant that refused service to Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The restaurant is in […]
Dear Media Concern Trolls,
Go fuck yourselves. Your whole sham pundit career is built on telling Democrats what they shouldn’t do, how they shouldn’t react, because it will “help” Republicans. Have you ever listened to yourself? Have you ever re-read what you just wrote? It is ridiculous. Every-fucking-thing helps Republicans according to you nit wits. Support Nancy Pelosi…helps Republicans. […]
Song Of The Day: June 24, 2018
The last song that Gram Parsons wrote and recorded before his death. To call it prescient would be an understatement:
June 23 Open Thread: The Cruelty Is Politically Motivated
Anyone who thinks the controversy over Trump’s immigration policies will cost Republicans bigly in November had better sober up. The issue is doing exactly what Trump wants — firing up Republicans so they’ve as motivated to vote as Democrats are. And it’s working. There are some uncomfortable facts that Democrats who see the issue as […]

From a Gram Parsons tribute album. Whiskeytown was a great roots group that featured Ryan Adams before he was Ryan Adams:
June 22 Open Thread: Do U Care? Well, Do U, Punk?
I have never for a moment thought that Melania Trump cared — her resting face says “bored rich model” better than words ever could — so I can only begin to guess her actual motivation for wearing the now-infamous $39 jacket printed with “I Really Don’t Care. Do U?” Obviously she knew what she was […]
Song Of The Day: June 22, 2018
From Gram Parsons’ first album, GP, from 1973. Nobody had really heard of Emmylou Harris before this. Together, they performed some of the greatest duets in the history of ‘cosmic American music’.
Delaware Political Weekly: June 15-21, 2018
1. Will Wilmington House Delegation Suck Even More Next Year? All signs point to yes. Rep. J. J. Johnson, who doesn’t live in Wilmington, but represents a small portion of the city, is retiring. Regardless of who succeeds him, they will inevitably have huge shoes to fill. Johnson is among the best legislators to serve […]
June 21 Open Thread: Trump Head-Fake Fools Nobody
The family separation controversy cooled off for a few hours yesterday as Trump promised to sign an executive order ending the practice. What he did instead was declare we would now operate what Samantha Bee called “Mommy and Me prisons,” which also sets up a battle with the federal courts. The separation policy has at […]
General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: June 21, 2018
A mixed bag yesterday. The good? State employees will now be entitled to 12 weeks of family leave for the birth or adoption of a child. The neutral? The Budget Bill passed the Senate. Yes, Colin Bonini was the only no. The bad: A constitutional amendment designed to put an end to onerous bail and […]
Song Of The Day: June 21, 2018
You might have thought that this was a power ballad. Not in the hands of Gram and Emmylou. Written by Boudleaux Bryant:
“Lock Her Up!” Shades of Nuremberg on the campaign trail
A Democracy relies on norms of behavior to work. Everything can be spelled out in laws, so at some point laws are secondary to having people who instinctually know what is good for maintaining the democracy and what is bad for it.
These Trump campaign rallies are terrible for democracy, and Trump simply doesn’t give a shit. He doesn’t give a single fuck about democratic norms. That’s terrible. But what is worse is the Republican Party going along with it. That’s the bigger betrayal. There’s your treason. Trump is a reckless sociopath who should be home yelling at his TV. The GOP, allowing this, is a bunch of sycophants and craven cowards. The rabid throngs being hectored and cajoled into the cattle chute of fascism, they are simply pathetic.
