Lisa Blunt Rochester for Congress wants your vote because…. reasons

Filed in National by on July 19, 2018

This shockingly tone deaf campaign announcement video isn’t just bad, it reveals something deeply troubling about Lisa Blunt Rochester.

She made history. Being sworn in was a very touching event for her. She has gay friends. She has friends who are racially and ethnically diverse – but she has literally no awareness of the fact that we are a nation in crisis. Does she even know that Trump is the President? According to the video, she doesn’t. Life in DC is a merry lark for our representative. Isn’t that great!?

Her campaign theme is something like, “When Lisa goes to Washington, we go to Washington.” Which, means when she takes in the lovely springtime cherry blossom, we take in the lovely springtime cherry blossoms. And when she goes to a nice lunch with lobbyists, we go to nice lunches with lobbyists. Isn’t that awesome?!

There is literally no substance to be found in the video, just as there is no substance to her record in congress.

If this video had been produced in 1990 it would still be bad, but forgivable. It isn’t 1990 though. It is not forgivable. We can’t have Democrats in Congress who are simply thrilled to be there and can’t find a way to fight back. Or worse, like Rochester, they can’t find a reason to fight back.

If your claim is that you represent Delaware in Congress – then you should be able to find 30 reason to fight before breakfast.

LISA – If you can’t think of a way to fightback, and this video is the best we can hope for, you don’t have the creativity or drive to be there.

  1. Faithful Skeptic says:

Jeez, @Jason, what’s the matter with your strategic mind? She’s not necessarily well-known yet to the broader public. This video is fine as far as it goes, you get to know her a little bit.

Review how she’s doing after Labor Day with the issues. Note that by then there’ll be (likely?) an R opponent against who she will have to align.

  2. Ben says:

thanks, Senator Carper, for that “shes not a republican!” response.
Btw, you should start packing up your office.

  3. Alby says:

A Congresswoman who has served 18 months without being known to the “broader public” is already guilty of being nothing but a placeholder.

Your argument boils down to “she’ll be better than a Republican.” Whoop-de-fucking-do.

  4. Jason330 says:

Faithful, I’ m a single issue voter, and the issue is Trump. If you haven’t joined the battle, or if (like LBR and Tom Carper) you don’t see a battle that needs joining, then I am done with you.

  5. Faithful Skeptic says:

@Jason, I didn’t know we had a relationship. Now, seriously, my point was, and remains, that any first-time member of Congress is at the most vulnerable point because (in this case) she is not as well known as a longer-time incumbent.

My strategic point is that she is doing what she should do, introducing herself to the voters. Battling Trump is such an open-field thing, filled with issues that seldom get set up as votes in the House of Representatives.

I take it from your postings that, unless LBR or Carper or Coons or Carney are banging the gong daily they’re not doing enough. We may think Warren or Sanders are out there slashing around every waking moment, but in reality they have constituent issues that take up a lot of their time — their staffs, both on the federal payroll and on the campaign payroll, make their livings showing us how active they are in the battle against DJT.

And as far as “Whoop-de-fucking-do” goes, yes, we will need every vote we have if we get the chance to take over the House. Every vote, not just those who we are in love with.

  6. Chicken Jason says:

3 times as Faithful Skeptic I posted a response to the above comments, and 3 times you blocked it.

    Dialogue in only one direction?

  7. jason330 says:

I don’t know why your comments went directly into the trash file.

  8. jason330 says:

FTR – Your “strategy” is bullshit. See the evidence of the past 20 years of Dems follwoing that strategy.

Also – yes. If someone isn’t doing anything, that isn’t enough. Banging a gong would be a big step up from nothing.

  9. Alby says:

“we will need every vote we have if we get the chance to take over the House. Every vote, not just those who we are in love with.”

My point, which you missed, is that anyone with a D after her name will fill that requirement. A reliable do-nothing isn’t worth rejoicing. Because the seat is reliably Democratic, it behooves us to aim higher.

FWIW, I had comments trashed as well.

  10. Alby says:

On banging the gong, the alternative to LBR isn’t banging it “daily,” it’s banging it ever. Monthly would be a dream.

  11. Alby says:

I like the name Chicken Jason better than Faithful Skeptic.

  12. Kilgore Trout says:

LBR’s votes are listed with Trump’s position on those bills.

  13. Alby says:

    @KT: Thanks for the link.

  14. Arthur says:

LBR is part of the delaware royal family.

  15. jason330 says:

Votes schmotes. There is nothing as irrelevant the minority in the House. I’m talking about what has she done? The answer is Fuck All, and that video is evidence of it.

  16. LBR is vulnerable because…she has to face the winner of a Lee Murphy/Scott Walker primary? Seriously? The R’s punted on this race and have two vanity candidates battling it out.

Which, in truth, is what LBR appears to be. She got a huge insurance settlement when her husband passed away, and she used that money to run an issue-free campaign that centered on her being the first ‘woman of color’ to occupy that seat.

What does she stand for other than her reelection? I HATE candidacies like this. BTW, Sherry Dorsey Walker is LBR-light. All touchy-feely, no substance.

  17. jason330 says:

Like most state-wide elected Dems, she won a sinecure. You have to be a Chip Flowers to blow it once you’ve got it.

  18. Jim C says:

Does anyone know if she’s signed on to the “Medicare for All Caucus” that was announced yesterday. Try as I may, I’ve been unable to find a list of names although the stories that first came out mentioned 62 Democrats and today they’re talking 70?
Guess I got to call her tomorrow and then keep calling till they remember my name!
I admit I can be a PITA given a good reason!

  19. RE Vanella says:

You had to check? That’s funny….

Joking aside, I fear Jason is correct. incorrigible.

  20. Jim C says:

Thanks, time to do my sworn civic duty!
how about we all call tomorrow 202-225-4165

  21. Paul says:

Where is evidence of knowledge of the current state Democratic Party Platform? I think the party is in a better place if we take the platform seriously.

  22. Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

IMO: A one-term, minority party Congresswoman from a state with only one US Rep has possibly the weakest position of anyone in the history of the US Congress. If she goes down there with a flamethrower, we’ll read about plans to close Dover AFB or the Elsmere VA. I think you guys are being too harsh.

  23. RE Vanella says:

I take your point. Two quick things on it.

I don’t think Jason means bring a flamethrower. I think he means just go armed. Everyone else is.

If being a one term Rep from a state with one seat is her excuse what’s Carper’s & Coons’ excuse. There’s every reason to think she’s another go along get along corporatist.

  24. puck says:

Signing up with Medicare for All would violate the terms of her Carperdyne franchise contract.

  25. Don’t think the standard is too high. My standard?: Stand for something other than your own myth-making.

The name’s available, I make no claim to it, it was only to get attention and a response. Response received, explanation accepted (also Alby’s).

    We can move on now.

  27. Alby says:

@FS: I was just trying to lighten things up. If I ever move somewhere that lets me keep chickens, I’m naming the first one Jason.

Which reminds me, I hear they’re breeding a new “Trump chicken” down in Sussex. It will have white meat only.
