Song of the Day 9/18: The Bottle Rockets, “Get Down River”

I could do a whole week of flood songs in honor of Florence, but this live performance of “Get Down River” by alt-country rockers the Bottle Rockets seems to capture the mood best.

I saw this band, led by Brian Henneman, opening for and backing up Marshall Crenshaw, some years ago at the Queen on Market Street. They were big in the early ’90s alt-country movement thanks to their links to Uncle Tupelo, their Appalachia-tinged sound and songs like “Indianapolis” (“Can’t go west, can’t go east, I’m stuck in Indianapolis with a fuel pump that’s deceased”) and “Welfare Music,” which took a swipe at conservatives who crap on the downtrodden.

If you like flood footage, the video for this cover of “Get Down River” by Mike Aiken features lots of high water.
