Song of the Day – The Style Council

Filed in National by on October 1, 2018

The Style Council is probably my favorite band. I only say “probably” becuase the enjoyment of music is so context heavy. Paul Weller is my favorite musician. (For some reason, no probably is required.)

The band’s sexy/funky jazz influence was picked up by the “new romantic” bands of the mid 80’s and while those bands (Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Roxy Music, etc) were good, they didn’t have the subversive politics which gave the Style Council their power.

“Walls Come Tumbling Down!” and “The Whole Point of No Return” are direct attacks on Thatcherite principles.

Rising up to break this thing
From family trees the dukes do swing
Just one blow to scratch the itch
The law’s made for and by the rich
It would be easy.
So, so easy.

Yes to Paul Weller, from the Jam to this year’s solo album.

Just for the record, Roxy Music started in the early ’70s, when Eno was still known as Brian Eno.
