Song of the Day – Bronski Beat

Filed in National by on October 2, 2018

Young homosexual men may find it hard to believe that being openly gay in the 1980’s was an act of protest in and of itself.

An all openly gay band singing gay themed hit songs seemed as implausible as electing a gay President. And yet, the all gay Bronski Beat achieved success in the mid-1980s with a Hi-NRG sound and lyrics focused on anti-gay prejudice.

Why?

Contempt in your eyes
As I turn to kiss his lips
Broken I lie
All my feelings denied
Blood on your fist
Can you tell me why?
You in your false securities
Tear up my life
Condemning me
Name me an illness
Call me a sin
Never feel guilty
Never give in
Tell me why?
You and me together
Fighting for our love
Can you tell me why?

– Bronski Beat.

  1. Wow. Great choice.

That’s not at all hard for me to believe. It’s just that I assumed that by “gay songs”, you meant stereotypically gay music like Wham, not songs that are actually about homosexuality. That’s why the notion of gay songs struck me as offensive at first, but I see what you mean now.
