Colleen Davis is bad at driving
This suspended license story is told with breathless excitement by Scott Goss. It was no doubt dictated to him breathlessly. Would it have changed anything if it came out before the election? No. She had an advantage going into the election that Simpler could not match. She got to run against Ken Simpler.
State Treasurer-elect Colleen Davis could have a hard time commuting to her new job after being cited this week for driving on a suspended license and three other traffic-related offenses.
Wouldn’t have changed my vote. There is no comparison to the criminal enterprise that is the Republican party. Not to mention Ken Simpler and his policies are odious.
Still it is concerning. Were her driving lapses due to something going on in her life, or does she have a cavalier and entitled attitude to the rules? Something to keep an eye on with her.
As someone who never renews his license on time, I’m not throwing any stones at all.
Well, it is a legit story. Yes, Goss sucks at journalism, but don’t confuse the message with the messenger.
Nickle and diming people with endless fines for not paying fines is a story.
That glib lede doesn’t give the impression that this is a legit story.
Notice the article doesn’t point out that she’ll have a hard time commuting because Delaware’s public transportation sucks.
She needs serious PR coaching. Saying “I would like to end this conversation now” and hanging up the phone is the wrong response to just about any question in any situation.
Agree. When Scott Goss is on the other end of the line you have to know you are being set up by Dave Burris (..or some Republican).
The Rethugs have GOT to have something already lined up for him. Since they don’t have any statewide offices, I look for him to land with one of the R caucuses in Dover.
Do you mean he’ll get a cushy state job like Drew Volturo, Dan Shortridge, Doug Dennison, Jon Starkey, Eric Ruth, and how many more reporters who ended up with state jobs from the Democrats? You’re throwing a stone from a mighty thin glass house on that one.
Uh, no I’m not. I’ve been critical of that revolving door for years and the timid reporting that preceded those hires. Thought Volturo was a good reporter before he made the move, though. The rest? Meh. And you missed a lot. Nancy Kesler comes to mind. That was quite a while ago, though.

Reporters tend to get hired by political campaigns and offices for the purpose of interacting with the media — everywhere, not just in Delaware.
Given the condition of legacy media, it’s about as surprising as tomorrow’s sunrise.
Yeah, it’s not as if the dying local rag affords reporters much in the way of a bright journalistic career.
I think what’s gradually changed, though, is the impetus to work at the paper IN ORDER to get a governmental PR job.
I believe it was an old foreign correspondents’ motto: “Get in, get smart, get out.”
Because the minority party always adds new staff after an election where they lose a seat, makes total sense. Do you even bother thinking through your half baked hot takes or was this just another opportunity to fellate Dave Burris on this blog?

Yeah, if a Republican had their license suspended at least four times and kept driving and disregarded court dates and basically felt entitled to do so, I’m sure DL would be just fine with that.

She wouldn’t even disclose the reasons for the previous suspensions. Would you let someone like that run your own personal finances? Probably should keep a good eye on this one.
The treasurer has no powers. She runs nothing, just as Simpler ran nothing. In defanging Chip Flowers, the Democrats turned it into a ceremonial position. The only reason Simpler was targeted was his gubernatorial ambition.
The office you ought to be upset at losing is the auditor, which actually has some power.
The sad fact is that the Trumpians, formerly known as the Republicans, will never win again statewide no matter who they run. Nobody wants to elect a Nazi, no matter how “good’ he pretends to be.
Your policies are shit, your candidates are shit, which means you ought to get away from it before people start to assume you also are shit.

Another re-hash in the News Journal today. The story is interesting to me for two reasons; someone tipped Goss off on this, so who had something to gain by releasing this story now? Hall-Long and McGuiness come to mind as down the road competition, but that is obviously pure speculation.
Secondly, whatever happened to oppo research? These are public records I think and similar to the Wagner mortgage fiasco 4 years ago it is strange to me that the story didn’t see the light of day until now.
I thought the same thing. Could the GOP have such terrible timing? It is a party in name only, but there are still a few competent individuals involved.
So you’re saying Simpler would have had a better chance had he used her driving record from the ages of 17-23 against her in the campaign? Exactly how would that hit piece read? You should think these things through, they don’t make sense. Those infractions are only relevant now because of the most recent charges and the old ones create a pattern when it comes to managing these problems. The new charges weren’t known and wouldn’t show up in oppo research before the election.
Serious question- do you actually think these things through or do you immediately comment whatever comes to mind?

The driving issue COULD be something to keep an eye on. Davis got elected for the most part b/c she wasn’t Simpler and wasn’t a Rethuglican man. There wasn’t a huge public vetting of her candidacy.
It may be nothing, but I hope that any controversies begin and end with this.

I can’t believe you read the whole thing if that’s your takeaway. He wrote it himself and it’s one of the best this obit-desk veteran ever read. It has all the wisdom, sly wit and generosity of spirit that marked all his work, on a lot more fronts than Leg Hall — which I can say, as his editor for five years, he avoided as long as he could. He hated the place, but did his usual excellent job once he drew the short straw.
He didn’t have to give the cause of death. When obits were compiled by the newsroom, we wouldn’t run one without it. Now that they’re ads, they’re not required. J.L. wrote a news story and, as he always did, he included all the facts.
I did read the entire thing. I thought it was great. I hope he would’ve appreciated the joke.
