I had to end this week saluting artists who I’ve booked at the Gild Hall with my favorite guests of all time. Not only were the Holmes Brothers wonderful performers, but they became adopted sons to our audience. They loved coming here as much as we loved having them. The nicest people of all time. Both Wendell Holmes and Popsy Dixon have passed on, but my memories of them are indelible. Here are a couple of my faves, the first one written by Wendell based on an inscription in his mom’s high school yearbook. The second one, which demonstrates what brilliant roots interpreters they were, was written by Gillian Welch, and is a devastating commentary on the challenges facing musicians:
