Open Thread – Trump Show “Live” Tonight & “Hummers” Parade Dead

Filed in National by on January 8, 2019

Trump is expected to declare some national security emergency tonight because 4 people on the terrorist watch list were once stopped at our border with Mexico.

So all other news basically shrinks into insignificance as we may be facing a major constitutional crisis. Are we living in the last 12 hours of the American Republic as we’ve known it? How exciting!

Closer to home, racist, Trumper a-holes in Middletown will no longer be invited to parade their racist a-holeishness in everyone’s face every New Year’s day.

“There will be no permits issued for the Jan. 1, 2020 Hummers Parade until guidelines are approved by the council,” Branner said. “This is where we are headed as a result of the parade last Tuesday. We are not going to tolerate this.”

This change is thanks to swift and sure community activism.

Community advocate and former U.S. Senate candidate Kerri Evelyn Harris said last week that she and others are not calling for an end to the parade, but that “hateful and hurtful” displays shouldn’t be the way to celebrate the new year.

“I don’t condone taking away a person’s right to free speech, but that doesn’t mean that I sit silently when I disagree with the content,” she said. “Somebody has to take responsibility.”

But it wasn’t just liberal snowflakes like me and KEH, but also some new faces at the barricade including Senators Paradee and Hansen who both came down hard and early on the Trumper A-Hole parade in a way you wouldn’t have seen a few years ago. Props to them.

So fuck you MOT area Trumpers. Fuck you very, very much.

So… is this what KEH is going to do for a living now? The grift is real.

    • jason330 says:

If you are really curious, why not post under your real name so she can check in directly with you about what you decide is appropriate work?

    • RE Vanella says:

You think political organizing and activism is a grift? What kind of money do you think is in it? That’s funny how dumb you are…

Trump’s “national emergency” contains a path out of the shutdown:

    1. Military starts building some piece of fencing
    2. Senate passes House funding bills; Trump signs
    3. Court stops military wall-building project

    Also,

I’ve never been to a Hummer parade but if it has to pass through some Chamber of Commerce review, the Hummer parade by definition no longer exists. Somebody should trademark the name so next year’s sanctioned and vetted event can’t call itself Hummers.

  4. RE Vanella says:

I stood with the activists last night in Middletown. The group was very clear. No one asked for the parade to be discontinued. No one said the first amendment doesn’t apply, even to disgusting displays of hurtful ignorance. But we also have the right to turn out (hundreds strong) to voice dissent.

Mayor and council said they are putting a committee together to run to parade and vet the participants ahead of time. As my man Coby Owens said, whether they follow through is yet to be seen.

And one last note to our new anonymous troll. If you think there is some financial reward involved for organizing and doing activism for the poor, immigrants and the disenfranchised, I’d like to know what you think it is. How is it monetized?

    • T Kline says:

Please enlighten us with your definition of immigrant?

      • RE Vanella says:

Dr Johnson didn’t define immigrant. Perhaps the greatest lexicographer in the English language did define ‘migrate’ as “the act of changing place.”

Noah Webster invented the word ‘immigrate’ in the early 19th century. He defined it as “to removed into a country.”

So I guess that works for me. “A person who removes into a country.”

        How’s that grab ya?

I was truly hoping that the individuals involved in that display would step up to openly apologize for bad humor that went entirely too far. However, their silence & hiding underground lends to me believe it was what we all fear the most – a display of pure racism hiding behind the cloak of satire.

  6. Alby says:

Can someone give me a quick version of what happened at the Hummers Parade that brought this on?

I know that at the Mummers Parade in Philly, activists were very upset about a guy in blackface who turned out to be…African-American.

    • ben says:

people were upset that, that was widely perceived by the AA community to be a minstrel show, depicting Jay-Z leading Mayor Kenny around like a dog was performed.

Put a grown man in a dog kennel with soiled white briefs to satirize the kids dying in detention centers.

Apparently these rodents came up from Virginia (so said the mayor).

  8. RE Vanella says:

Deaths in concentration camps is about as funny as lynchings. Good stuff.

  9. Alby says:

Thanks, RE, but I don’t have a subscription. I read up on it via the Middletown Transcript.

As they say, dying is easy, comedy is hard.

  10. Alby says:

Y’all will have to color me as less than impressed that, given the long history of Middletown as a racist shithole, this is what has moved people to action.

Black Lives Matter first, sensitivity-policing of parades second. Just MHO.

  11. nathan arizona says:

Just wondering (regarding the Phila kerfuffle): Why wouldn’t an image that depicts a black man leading a white mayor on all-fours with a leash be at least as positive a statement about black empowerment as the use of blackface to make that statement is negative? Especially (but not only) since the man wearing “blackface” turned out to actually be black.

    • Alby says:

I’m guessing it’s because the skit was implicitly criticizing Kenney for caving in to Jay-Z’s demands. Which is of course the opposite of Middletown, where the presentation was somehow seen as supporting the treatment of immigrants.

Sensitivity policing is not a job for the open-minded.

  12. Delawaredude says:

A lot of grandstanding last night but Kenny Branner did most of the real work. He never gave permits out, now he will check to make sure no one is doing anything nuts like what happened on Sat. He kept it pretty under control last night, I think he kinda said this my town, thanks for coming down from Wilmington to let us know how to live but we got this. Problem solved. KEH does need some new lines though. I thought the best speaker was the gentleman from the Hispanic Coalition.

  13. Alby says:

Kenny Branner is pretty close to the entire problem with Middletown. The fact that he thinks anyone who isn’t from Middletown is “from Wilmington” illustrates his Boss Hogg mindset. Delaware, and the world, will be better places once he’s no longer in them.

  14. RE Vanella says:

    Kerri lives in Dover.

And as far as the “this is how we do it down here” argument, nah dog.

And I’ll tell you what, if this bullshit hick racist trash continues you let Branner know we’ll be back. Maybe will bring 500 people next time.
