Charter Schools Report Card: “Corruption, fraud and diminished learning opportunities”

Filed in National by on February 6, 2019

Eschaton points out that reality has caught up with Democratic charter school advocates, and it was perfectly predictable.

After more than 20 years of growth nationally, it is noteworthy that some of the trend lines for charters are on the decline. This experiment with deregulation has resulted in massive corruption, fraud and diminished learning opportunities for young people.

As a state monitor, I observed a number of incompetent people serve as charter school administrators because Ohio state law has no minimum educational requirements nor any professional licensing prerequisites for school leaders.

In addition, numerous conflicts-of-interest, including a board member serving as landlord and management companies charging exorbitant rents for properties conveniently used for charter schools, are only part of the problem of the charter experiment.

When your core premise is that teachers unions are evil, and throwing lots of money at unaccountable for-profit companies will fix everything, what could possibly go wrong?

Gee, Charter Schools are a racket? Total lack of shock, sometimes you really can see it coming.

  2. puck says:

Progressives have largely failed to point out that charter schools are harmful to public education, promote segregation, and drain resources and opportunity from students in the traditional public schools.

    • RE Vanella says:

Leftists, on the other hand, always mention this!

    • bamboozer says:

At some levels surely, but every teachers union and group has denounced this game as have I, it was obvious that the game was not really improved teaching so much as improved profits.

      • RE Vanella says:

        Teachers are getting the message

        Colorado…

I’d love to foment a statewide teachers strike in Delaware. Unfortunately I have no contacts or leverage & I’ve always ignored the issues (no kids)…

        • MikeM2784 says:

Teacher strikes are illegal in Delaware since the “big one” back in the 1970s. Not sure what would actually happen if the union ignored it. Delaware teachers also are “relatively” better off than in many of the other places where big strikes have occurred.

          • bamboozer says:

The teachers strikes in West Virginia and other states were also “illegal”, and teachers in Delaware make less than PA and if memory serves New Jersey as well. If they strike I suspect the response would be the usual cowardly half measures from Carney and assorted whining from the rest.

          • Mike Matthews says:

Strikes are illegal, but the largest decision making body of DSEA, the Representative Assembly, which meets every March, has the authority to vote to take a statewide job action — although the definition of “job action” can be vague.

Here in Delaware, charter schools are an issue. Not nearly an issue as they are in other states, where it truly is a Wild Wild West, but definitely an issue.

            • RE Vanella says:

Wildcat strike. Every teacher walks out. Who cares what’s legal. Is the governor going to dismiss the teacher en masse. No, because he’s an incredibly weakling.

The oligarchs send their children to Tatnall, Friends and Tower Hill.

The petit bourgeoisie move house to Chester Co., Chadds Ford, Kennett Sq, etc.

Carney papers over things with this $60 million over 3 years trickle down.

Fucking strike god damnit. I’ll walk the picket with your as long as it takes.

              Also, come on the podcast.

    • John Kowalko says:

as a proud and dedicated “progressive” and any other brand you wish to put on me, I have (for the last 12 years) pointed out that Charters are harmful to public education, promote segregation, and drain resources (taxpayer money) from traditional schools. The ACLU has refused my requests to have them join me in challenging Newark Charter’s exclusion of admission for Christina District Wilmington High School students. Although their parents and residents pay an equal share of their taxpayer monies to Newark Charter. My colleagues have rebuffed my efforts to reform the excesses of the Charter Schools and have even created additional taxpayer funded resources available exclusively to Charters. I have publicly challenged in articles and legislative debates the opportunities denied traditional school students by the admissions exclusivity and lack of ethnic, socio-economic, cultural and linguistic diversity in Charter schools. This “progressive” has not failed to point this out and will continue to until changes are made.

Let’s be honest with ourselves both Public & Charter schools BLOW in Delaware. No wonder most politicians send their children to private.

  3. Arthur says:

if you want to get elected to public office, get on a public school board. if you want to line your pockets get on a charter board

  4. RE Vanella says:

I absolutely promise to stand on the picket for real. I love that shit.

I suspect you’ll have demands met in 2 days.

Every fucking public school should be on par with Tower Hill. The money is not the issue. The issue is political will. A wildcat teacher strike would have a way of locating that will.

  5. RE Vanella says:

Mike – Did I mention the podcast? Let’s do it.

Just like everything else in the little corrupt state. No accountability at the highest levels, all the money going to crony contractors, critical positions vacant, no real concern over what is actually needed.

    Wildcat Strike!
