Song of the Day 3/12: Sugar Stems, “We Only Come Out at Night”

I’m invoking our new Earworm Warning for this one, which I first heard when it was released in 2014 and not much since. Yet it popped into my head unbidden a few days ago and it’s still there. So consider yourself warned.

Sugar Stems formed in Milwaukee in 2007 and released two albums before “Only Come Out at Night, but nothing since. They appear to be inactive since mid-2018, which is too bad — this power pop confection stands as testament to their talents.

The video, with its torn-paper animation of a crew of party animals, is based on the album’s cover art by frontwoman Betsy Heibler. I guess each band member chose his or her own animal; I’m not sure what it says about the bass player that she chose a skunk.
