Song of the Day 3/13: Minus the Bear, “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse”

Filed in National by on March 13, 2019

I’m not an absinthe drinker, but the lyrics of this song from Minus the Bear’s first album speak directly to my present situation:

Hey, let’s cross the sea
and get some culture
Red wine with every meal
and absinthe after dinner…
Sitting on a park bench
that’s older than my country

The video is by a USC film student. The music starts at 0:10.

Minus the Bear was a Seattle band that formed in 2000 and got lumped in with the “math rock” genre because of its complex time signatures, but otherwise it sounds like the mainstream rock of the period. They’re also known for their imaginative song titles, among them “Monkey! Knife! Fight!” and “Lemurs, Man, Lemurs.” They called it quits at the end of 2018. This tune is from their 2002 album “Highly Refined Pirates.”

Funny story about the band’s name. A friend of theirs went on a blind date, and someone in the band asked him how it went. The guy said, “You remember that TV show ‘B.J. and the Bear’? It was like that, minus the bear.”
