Don’t allow NRA Stooge, Pete Schwartzkopf, to kill HB63 in the Senate

Filed in National by on March 14, 2019

HB63 does nothing to impact the rights of responsible gun nuts. Opposing HB63 literally means that you support irresponsible gun ownership.

This Act revises the crime of “unlawfully permitting a child access to a firearm,” an existing class A misdemeanor under Delaware law. The offense is renamed “unsafe storage of a firearm” to place emphasis on firearm safety and proper storage. Under the revised statute, a crime is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly stores or leaves a loaded firearm where a minor or other person prohibited by law, or “unauthorized person,” can access the firearm, and the unauthorized person obtains the firearm.

NRA stooge, Pete Schwartzkopf, allowed a similar bill to die in the Senate last year.

Danny Short provided the usual NRA talking points in his opposition to the bill.

“At the end of the day, what is the substance of the bill that will actually drive results?” he said. “I don’t think it does anything, really.”

In other words, “This bill doesn’t end all gun crime everywhere so I oppose it.” This transparent ridiculousness only prevails while NRA stooge, Pete Schwartzkopf, allows it to prevail.

  1. Delaware Dem says:

Pete Schwartzkopf is Speaker of the House. He has no position in the Senate. I get your meaning, that he might lobby President Pro Tem Dave McBride or conservative Dem Bruce Ennis to oppose or scuttle the bill, but he cannot officially do anything to the bill in the Senate.

Nevertheless, DD is correct. Pete can bully people in the Senate but he has no mechanism for derailing a bill there. He can, however, undermine it should the Senate attach any amendments to it, because then it would have to go back to the House.

So if I were Pete and wanted to scuttle it, I’d convince someone in the Senate to amend it.

  2. RE Vanella says:

The bicameral legislature explainers are logged on. Super.

    We had no idea!

  3. jason330 says:

Yeah, I fucked up. I was giving Pete far too much power, I think because Dave McBride is a cipher to me.

  4. The bill cleared committee, so Pete can’t really kill it. His main weapon in killing bills is to assign them to inhospitable committees.
