Song of the Day 4/16: Al Green w/ Lyle Lovett, “Funny How Time Slips Away”
Funny how I’m always finding new old stuff on YouTube. I knew Al Green recorded a solo version of this Willie Nelson song in the 1970s, but I didn’t realize he had re-recorded it in a more uptempo version with Lyle Lovett. Serves me right for not paying attention to the Grammy Awards; Green won one in 1995 for this Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Tasty keyboards by the late great Billy Preston, too.
Here’s the first version of this song I ever heard. I think it stands the test of time:

Thanks, El Som.
Hard to choose among Willie’s many renditions on YouTube, but this one shows off his guitar playing, which is often overlooked even by his fans:

Sunday, April 28…
Congo Square stage on the New Orleans Racecourse grounds…
5:45pm … Al Green! I’ll be there.
(Preceded on that stage by the O’Jays….)
Jazzfest is imminent. Laissez bon temps rouler.
Jimmy Elledge had the first hit recording of this in 1961. The great Georgie Fame did a jazzier version a few years later. Great song.

There are those who consider this 1975 cover by Narvel Felts the best version. Narvel the Marvel certainly gives it a vocal workout.
