American media STILL loves being clowned by Trump

Trump’s proposed tariffs on Mexico were complete bullshit from the outset.  They were toothless nonsense  that would have had a crippling effect on the U.S. economy.  They were never serious, and yet when Trump called off the threat late last week, the news was breathlessly reported as a dramatic win for the White House:

“Trump: U.S., Mexico reach deal to avoid new tariffs” (NPR)

“Trump drops his Mexico tariff threat after reaching immigration enforcement deal” (CNN)

“Trump says U.S. and Mexico reach last-minute deal to avoid tariffs” (CBS)

“The trade war ended before it began, forestalling that economic reckoning,” The New York Times stressed in its initial coverage. – Via Daily Kos

Fucking dupes.

When he announced a “deal,” I just assumed it was bullshit. This isn’t all that hard to figure out. He does the same dumb things over and over again, and the media keeps falling for it. A free press is useless if it’s also a stupid press.

Days and days of headlines. The for-profit media depends upon fear and outrage to move the product, and Trump gives them plenty of both.

Most people act only in self-interest. They will stop only when it stops paying off. Look at how long it took them to stop writing stories about Sarah Palin, who had no power at all other than the power to outrage.

You’ll also notice that Republicans had no problem standing up to Trump when it threatened their own electoral prospects.
