Joe Van Winkle fell sleep under a tree 30 years ago. When he nodded off Republicans were reasonable partners in democracy who he could “disagree with without being disagreeable.” He’d often say ” it’s always appropriate to question a Republican’s judgment, but never appropriate to question his motives because you simply don’t know his motives.”
“By God, that Joe Van Winkle knows a little something about something,” People’d say. You see, that there was the kind of Joe Van Winkle nonsense that impressed people 30 years ago.
But sadly, Joe Van Winkle just can’t catch up with the world that spun away from him while he slept. Why, old Joe Van Winkle just told a room of donors and lobbyists that Republicans “know better” and said that his Republican friends would be fighting to cooperate as soon as Donald Trump’s stops presidentin’ around.
Joe Van Winkle reckons change is possible in Congress. He feels it in his trick knee. “With Trump gone you’re going to begin to see things change. Because these folks know better. They know this isn’t what they’re supposed to be doing.” The room broke out in to gales of laughter…I expect.
Talking over the laughter, Biden said that 12 former Republican colleagues in the Senate expressed concerns about the party’s blockade of Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland (the Garland episode predated Trump’s presidency). SEE? They’s concerned. That’s PROOF!
