Song of the Day 6/27: Jakob Dylan and Jade Castrinos, “Go Where You Wanna Go”

In case you hadn’t noticed, Laurel Canyon is having a moment, and it’s not just the new Springsteen album. Jakob Dylan has put together a documentary called “Echo in the Canyon” about the music scene in that part of Los Angeles in the late ’60s. The film has gotten mixed reviews — one big criticism is that it ignores how the love-and-patchouli era in LA music ended — with the Manson murders. To accompany the film, Dylan has released an LP on which he covers some of the tunes from the era. Here he is with Jade Castrinos, the vocalist from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, on a tune John Phillips wrote for the Mamas and the Papas in 1965. (There’s also a Jimmy Kimmel Live clip of the song from last month, but Castrinos was not in good voice that night, so this is the LP track)

The original appeared on the Mamas and Papas 1965 LP “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears,” and was briefly released as the A-side of the group’s single until someone realized they should instead promote the song on the B-side, “California Dreamin’.”

The song reached the charts two years later, when the vocal group the Fifth Dimension released it as their first single.
