I just got this in my in-box, and I’m psyched. No, things aren’t going to turn around overnight. But the toxic nature of the Rethuglican brand nationwide means that we shouldn’t leave Sussex County to the R’s and what passes for leadership in the moribund D ranks. We Are Sussex We’re working to change our county, and we’re going to need your help. I learned a lot about our county during our campaign for State Representative last year… and now, along with Stacie Burton and others that we’ll introduce over the next few weeks, we’ve started a group to tackle the issues that stand in the way of Democrats winning elections in Sussex County. I learned that it’s not issues that stand in the way of winning. In fact, many of the people behind the 10,000 doors we knocked on agreed with us that we need higher minimum wages, increased, affordable access to health care, to clean up our water, and a host of other issues. What stands in our way is a lack of organization, a lack of knowledge about what our elected officials are (or, most likely, are not) accomplishing, and a lack of avenues to promote information from candidates. We’re going to change that.   Stacie Burton is the founder and chair of We Are Sussex, she also serves on the National Board for the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial, representing the State of Delaware, is the chair of the Sussex County Women’s Democratic Club, and is a board member for the Bryan A. Stevenson School for Excellence. She has worked in county and state government for over 10 years. How is We Are Sussex going to affect state and local elections?   By organizing. The average campaign volunteer in Sussex is different than it is in the rest of the state, both in age and experience, but they’re just as motivated. We need to continue to maintain and increase the volunteer base that exists, so it’s ready to mobilize behind candidates. We’ve already hosted our first social event, and we’ll be announcing our next event soon. We’re also working to support candidates financially. If a candidate supports the Delaware Democratic Party’s platform, and is putting in the work necessary to win, we’ll do what we can to support them.    By educating. We’re going to focus on educating the public about what their representatives are doing in Dover, through social media posts, and more importantly, targeted ads on social media. The expectations on what our elected officials are doing for us is too low. We’re going to fix that. If you can’t go to Dover and accomplish anything, you don’t belong there. I don’t live in Sussex, why should I care? If you care about what happens in Delaware’s state government, you should. Did you know that Sussex County is responsible for almost 50% of the growth in our state’s population since the last census? For every 1 person that moved to New Castle County in the past 8 years, 2 people moved to Sussex County. Sussex County is going to have an increased say in what happens in our state. If we don’t start winning in Sussex, there will be an impact on the laws and progress that we can accomplish in Delaware. You want my money, don’t you? You’re getting enough emails from one of the 58 presidential candidates now, you know a fundraising email when you read it. But in this case, your hard earned dollar will go towards building a grassroots movement in Sussex County that will help bring change to our state. We didn’t win last year, but we did start something special.
