Songs Of The Day For Oct. 5, 2019: Save The Country/Wedding Bell Blues

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on October 5, 2019

Laura Nyro, one of my favorite songwriters from this era, wrote both songs.  She originally released an over-produced version of ‘Save The Country’ in 1968 (Columbia Records was pushing for a hit), but recorded a solo version of the song for 1969’s New York Tendaberry album:

The 5th Dimension had a big hit in 1969 with Nyro’s ‘Wedding Bell Blues’. Featuring, in my opinion, the most gorgeous woman in the history of rock ‘n soul, Marilyn McCoo.

An aside apropos nothing: Hillary Clinton came to Cab Calloway for a campaign event shortly after l’affaire Lewinsky.  The school’s chorus, apparently without a hint of irony, sang ‘Wedding Bell Blues’. I LOL’d.
