McGuiness Pushes For Audit Of UD Books. It’s as simple as this. Every June 30, the University Of Delaware loads up its figurative Armored Car with tens of millions in state dollars. For like, forever, UD has been able to avoid state oversight of how it spends these dollars, all while pushing state students off to other institutions rather than using those dollars to educate those students. Now, whether the Kramedas Keystone Kops are kapable of konducting such an audit is an open question. But the taxpayers (and prospective in-state students) deserve answers. General Assembly: The ball’s in your court.
D Legislators Looking To Kill Live-Streaming? Spare me the ‘cost’ argument. Enabling the live-streaming of both legislative sessions and committee meetings is in the public interest, pure and simple. And it’s really not that expensive. The ‘fear’ that caucus meetings might inadvertently be streamed is, as John Flaherty points out, a ‘red herring’. There is simply no justifiable argument for opposing this initiative. I’m with the R’s on this one.

I’m especially disappointed in Rep. Minor-Brown’s dismissal of the idea. Didn’t expect to see that.

BTW, do you remember how fast both Carney and Markell flipped from Clinton to Obama back in late 2007/early 2008 when Hillary floundered and Michelle and Barack came to Delaware? They fell all over themselves to make sure they both shared the same platform with Obama when he came to Rodney Square.

Gotta love Park City Kathy. She has spent most of the last two years whining about how she doesn’t have the staffing to conduct audits that are required by law, and now she’s pitching a bitch about UD not wanting her office to audit them. UD should welcome an audit by Team Kathy because (a) it’s not sharp enough to find anything, and (b) once she hears that there are a lot of Greek organizations on campus, she won’t look very hard.
Good point. The UD should welcome such an audit, knowing full well how amateurish the execution of the audit would be.

The U of DE funding issue is coming at an interesting time. In Maryland there is a lawsuit by HBCUs against the state regarding funding disparities with the University of Maryland system. Maryland is going to have to settle, they have offered $200 million, HBCUs want almost three times that.

The University of Delaware, a “state agency”, needs to be held accountable according to a 70 year old court ruling. Our legislature needs to make this happen today.
In 1950, Delaware’s Chancery Court Vice Chancellor Seitz ruled in Parker vs University of Delaware that “I conclude that the University of Delaware is an agency of the State of Delaware under the common law and under the constitutional test required by the 14th Amendment. The actions of its Trustees must be judged in that light.” He also found “Other statutes require the President of the University to make an annual report on all aspects of the University to the Trustees who shall transmit the same to the Governor to be by him presented to the Legislature. The accounts of the Treasurer of the University are to be audited by the Auditor of Accounts in the same manner as the accounts of “other State officers.”
Findings from this case are relevant to the discussion about transparency and finances at the University of Delaware. I have not found any information that changes these findings but can’t rule that out as a possibility.
