Song of the Day 3/6: Genesis, “Turn It On Again”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on March 6, 2020

I missed this news earlier this week. Genesis — the three-man version of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford — is getting back together for a tour. So far it’s only in the UK, but they’re already adding more shows. As a prog-rock fan I loved the original lineup, before Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett left, but the the trio carried on the prog tradition quite well, at least at first. For example, this song, from the 1980 LP “Duke,” alternates time signatures between 13/4 and 9/4. “You can’t dance or clap along to it because of that time signature,” Banks says. “When we play it live, you can always see the audience getting caught out.”

The tune was released as a single. It reached the top 10 single in the UK but didn’t chart in the US — maybe that’s why the band got more commercial with each album after this.
