Song of the Day 3/30: Kasey Musgraves, “Burn One With John Prine”

Kasey Musgraves says this was one of the first songs she wrote when she moved to Nashville to pursue her career in country music. It’s a crowd favorite in concert, but she’s never officially released it and the chances of her doing so decreased when she recycled the couplet about piercing her nose in another song. She did, however, record a studio version, and it was the first thing I thought of when I heard John Prine is in critical condition with Covid-19.

Both Prine and Musgraves were on a music cruise in 2015, and they shared the stage while she sang it for him. He also told the story of the first time they met, at one of his annual New Year’s Eve parties. She invited him outside to share a joint, but Prine declined.
