UFO was one of the earliest British bands to earn the label “heavy metal,” forming in 1968, the same year as Black Sabbath. They never managed to score a hit in the U.S., but they reached the lower reaches of the UK charts several times. This was originally released in 1974 and failed to chart, but when they tried again with a live version in 1979 it climbed to No. 35, their highest-ever charting single in the UK.
The song gained greater fame when Iron Maiden covered it in 1982, and for decades they used it in concerts as the recorded song that played as the band took the stage.
