Song of the Day 5/22: Spinal Tap, “Gimme Some Money”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on May 22, 2020

Billionaires have taken to begging people to go back to work, using every tool at their disposal except higher wages and better benefits. The non-essential jobs, it turns out, are the ones at the top of the capitalism pyramid, and it takes a lot of cashflow to keep the money pump primed and flowing. Why, it’s almost enough to convince rich people that the economy isn’t money accumulated but money exchanged!

But they’ll never get it, because of the purity of their lust. So this song — direct, unvarnished, unapologetic — is for them.

One of the earliest hits by the legendary Tufnel-St. Hubbins songwriting team, recording as the Thamesmen, in a lip-synched performance of “Jamboreebop.”

Though they had bigger hits (“Big Bottom,” “Stonehenge”) “GSM” has had the longest legs of any Tap tune. Just last year they performed it with Elvis Costello for an audience at the Tribeca Film Festival (music starts at 1:09)
