Amid allegations that Russia secretly offered bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of American troops in Afghanistan, the investigation is focusing on an April 2019 attack that killed a Marine from Newark, sources told the Associated Press.
Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman, 43, who was also a New York City firefighter, was one of three Marines who died in the attack.
Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was offering bounties, a full year earlier than has been previously reported, according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence.

43, of Newark, Delaware, died in a bombing April 8, 2019, in Parwan province Afghanistan. Also killed in the attack were Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks and Sgt. Benjamin S. Hines. They were assigned to the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. The incident is under investigation. Slutman was a veteran of the Kentland, Maryland, volunteer fire department. He is survived by a wife and three children.
