80 years overdue, Washington DC area NFL team to announce name change today

Filed in National by on July 13, 2020

The “thorough review” into Washington’s team nickname that began on July 3 has concluded, and the franchise intends to announce Monday that it will retire the “Redskins” name, according to SportsBusiness Journal’s Ben Fischer. The franchise has been called the “Redskins” since 1933, before it moved from Boston to Washington in 1937.

It is not known at this time what Washington will choose as its new nickname, but Mike Jones of USA Today reports that the franchise will also reveal a new team name on Monday morning.

I expect some anodyne animal name. It would be nice to have some name tied to DC, like the old “Washington Senators.” But local names lessen marketability when teams are shopped to other cities.

Like the Utah Jazz, I presume.

“Tied to DC” ? Where is your wokeness man? You might as well name them the Slave Owning Columbusvillers. The name District of Columbia honors Christopher Columbus and Washington was a slave owner…..Nope, any reference to Washington or DC has to go dude.

    From wikipedia:

The Senators moved and were replaced with an expansion Senators team for 1961. The old Washington Senators became the new Minnesota Twins; the expansion Senators would become the Texas Rangers in 1972, and baseball would not return to the city until 2005, when the former Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals.

I’ve heard that the dumbest, most mendacious owner in sports wants “Warriors” because he wants to go through all of this again in 5 years.

    • Alby says:

All warriors are Native Americans? News to me. Though come to think of it, Patty Smyth was wearing makeup that looks like it might be war paint in the video.

      • Jason330 says:

Good point. They’ll probably make it a Army themed warrior. The NFL can’t get enough of making every Sunday Armed Forces Appreciation Day.

It will also kneecap the yahoos who will be feeling owned by the libs over this nonsense.

And when someone blows out a knee and goes on injured reserve, he’ll be called a Wounded Warrior. That’s gonna play real well at the Pentagon.
