Song of the Day 7/20: The Box Tops, “Cry Like a Baby”

Diaper Donnie was at it again in his bonkers interview with Chris Wallace, whining, complaining and generally acting like the giant baby that ate America. So here’s another one for that ever-growing Trump crybaby play list.

This was the follow-up single to the Box Tops’ smash No. 1 hit “The Letter.” Producer Dan Penn was searching for a suitable song to piggyback on the blue-eyed soul sound, so he asked songwriter and session man Spooner Oldham to lend a hand. After a long, fruitless night, they went to a diner, where Oldham put his head in his arms on the table and told Penn, “I could just cry like a baby.” The song came together in a few hours and was recorded less than three days later. It reached No. 2 on the charts, kept out of the No. 1 position by Bobby Goldsboro’s sickeningly treacly “Honey.” That’s Oldham on the Hammond organ and session guitarist Reggie Young on the electric sitar, which was all the rage at that time.
