El Somnambulo Predicts ‘Em All For You: The ‘Sorta Competitives’

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on September 10, 2020

There’s at least a veneer of competitiveness to these races, but I think the outcomes are relatively clear. In other words, although unlikely in my mind, I could be wrong, but I don’t think so:

US Representative (R): Lee Murphy over Matthew Morris.  We know from experience that ‘Go, Murph, Go!’  is hardly a juggernaut. But Morris’ campaign is invisible, and Murphy has gotten better at playing the role of a Trumpy. An actor always works at his craft.  Murphy has even added a pot belly to his repertoire.

Senate District 5 (D): Kyle Evans Gay over Eric Levin and Denise Bowers. I am in awe of her campaign. I even love her campaign signs.  Not only should she win this primary handily, but she has really set herself up well to challenge long-time incumbent (and new Hockessin resident) Cathy Cloutier.

Senate District 14 (D): Bruce Ennis over Kyra Hoffner and Terrell Williams. I really wish that this had been a one on one primary.  But those who are looking for change will likely split their vote. I want to see (a) whether Ennis reaches 50%, and (b) who finishes second.

NCC Executive (D): Matt Meyer over Maggie Jones.  Talk about pissing away your political influence.  The construction trades, as led by James Maravelias, and the newly-minted Trump-loving FOP deserve to be screwed once Meyer whups blank slate Maggie Jones.  Put another way, they won’t be dealing from a position of strength.

Wilmington Mayor (D): Mike Purzycki over Velda Jones-Potter and Justen Wright.  As political tacticians, the Potters are their own worst enemies.  Velda’s late switch into the race took this race from a likely win for Mayor Mike to a certain win for Mayor Mike.

Wilmington President Of City Council (D): Hanifa Shabazz over Trippi Congo.  It is indeed a depressing testimonial to the laughingstock that is City Council that Shabazz is the relatively ethical choice.  Yuck!

Coming next: The toughies!

Mostly agree with you on SD14, but I’ll be lit dropping* for Hoffner tomorrow. Ennis is 100 year old lump and Terrell Williams has been utterly invisible. If politics made any sense Hoffner would be the prohibitive favorite.

*If you have a minute ask your candidate with some door hangers and a list of Dems in your hood who voted in the last Dem primary. Don’t let the primary candidate you support lose by 2 votes.

Who is El Somnambulo? I’m new here, and clicking “About the Author” yields nothing.

Actually, I worked for the Delaware General Assembly for some 23 years, so the General Assembly and local elections are the main ‘beat’ I’ve chosen. I think I’m the only person to give a daily preview/wrap-up on every legislative session day.

Once you’ve read my stuff for awhile, you’ll realize that any bridge I hadn’t burnt when I left Dover has long since been torched. I, uh, have no regrets.
