Song of the Day 10/6: Lake Street Dive, “Making Do”
Don’t look now, but while we’re worried about COVID-19 and the future of democracy in the U.S., a more insidious threat to humanity just keeps rolling along. Climate change, the issue on which Republicans first took their science denial out for a spin, remains the greatest long-range problem our political culture refuses to deal with.
Lake Street Dive, the Boston-based band fronted by the dynamic Rachel Price, last week released a new song about it.
As you know, one of my fave bands of all time. Even Jason liked them. Almost had ’em at the Gild Hall…:

Mmmmm . . . Rachel Price. She goes down smooth.
Anyway, great song and video. Others, of course, give her more face time. I think I hear some Carole King in there.
She recorded a couple of jazz vocal albums and they were good. In fact, the reason why their major album debut was kept in limbo was b/c her father owned the jazz label she recorded for, and claimed exclusive rights to her voice.
Fellow LSD band member Bridget Kearney had won a John Lennon songwriting contest, and they used her reward money to buy Rachel’s freedom.
BTW, Bridget was in another great band that I had at the Gild Hall twice named ‘Joy Kills Sorrow’. I actually picked her (and her stand-up bass) up for the first gig at the bus station in, wait for it, Marcus Hook, PA, and the band rehearsed in our living room. We were all enthralled, especially my kids. Enabling my kids to hear great music is why I started producing the concerts. Totally worth it.
Bridget also edited the video for this song.
She also gets pretty jazzy with the standards-oriented duo Rachel & Vilray. Here’s a sample from an appearance on the Colbert show.

Tried to get them as well. Failed.
Great song. I was supposed to see LSD in June at the Keswick. I hope they return to the area in 2021. I saw them at the Tower two years ago. I have not had Bridget rehearse in my living room. Her smooth bass has been heard in my living room, however, many times.
If touring is allowed, they’ll be back in the Philly area. Drummer Mike Calabrese is a local.
I was going to nominate “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” for today’s song to acknowledge Mike Pence’s debate with Kamala Harris tonight. But with Eddie Van Halen’s passing, I think “Running With The Devil” is the one for this debate day.
