A theme of Republicanism is a showy, prideful ignorance about how things actually work. Elections, mass shootings, climate change, social security, on and on. .

It is more pronounced under Trump, but it has always been there.

    Another example: They know lots of stuff is unconstitutional, based on their own authority as constitutional scholars. And will just never shut up about it.

    I’m so old I remember when we referred to these people, quite accurately, as “cranks.” They weren’t numerous, but they were prolific, and prompted TNJ to limit the number of letters readers could have published in a given time frame; old-timers might remember one perpetually disgruntled old fart named Ralph Trader, who regaled TNJ readers for years with opinions that could have come straight from a John Birch newsletter.

    It’s the “conservative” (actually reactionary-radical) media that gave these people an outlet, and once this intellectual junk food was loosed, we learned that 45% of the public will believe anything provided it is stated forcefully enough often enough.
