Song of the Day 4/15: Ludovico Einaudi, “Due Tramonti (Two Sunsets)”

Oscar season is upon us — the ceremony takes place April 25 — and it will be a major shock if “Nomadland” isn’t named best picture. Everything about the film stands out amid Hollywood’s mass-produced dreck, including its soundtrack, mostly taken from Italian pianist-composer Ludovico Einaudi’s seven-album collection “Seven Days Walking.” Director Chloé Zhao, who also edited the movie, credited the music — inspired by Einaudi’s hikes in the Alps — with helping her shape the final form of her travelogue.

Despite its integral role in the film, Einaudi’s music wasn’t written for it, so it’s not eligible for an Oscar. But the classical station I was listening to included Einaudi in a segment on Oscar-related music, and this was the piece that caught my attention. Turns out this one isn’t in the film — it’s from Einaldi’s 1999 LP “Eden Roc” — but it would fit right in with its melancholy mood.
