Flag of the Day – POW/MIA

Filed in National by on February 15, 2022

For those of you too young to remember the events leading up the Viet Nam war – here is what happened. “…the North Vietnamese kidnapped 1,400 Americans and the United States had gone to war to retrieve them.”  That kidnapping was immortalized in the movie Rambo: First Blood Part II and National League of Families POW/MIA flag, often referred to as the POW/MIA flag.

Maybe that’s not exactly how it went down, but that is the story Nixon was telling in 1971 when he invented the cult of the “POW/MIA” in order to justify the carnage in Vietnam and to give himself a little bargaining power.

February 21, 2020 – VFW officials were present at the White House during the Oval Office signing of the National POW/MIA Flag Act by President Donald Trump.

The new law (P.L. 116-67) requires that POW/MIA flags be displayed below the U.S. flag at federal sites around the country. These locations include:

    -White House.
    -Capitol building.
    -World War II Memorial.
    -Korean War Veterans Memorial.
    -Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
    -National cemeteries.
    -State Secretary offices.
    -Defense Secretary offices.
    -VA Secretary offices.
    -Selective Service System Director’s office.
    -Military installations.
    -VA medical centers.
    -Post offices.

VFW Commander-in-Chief William “Doc” Schmitz said the law will serve as a “daily reminder” of service members still missing in action.

That’s one salty PR stunt by Nixon.
