A copyright infringement lawsuit was filed last week against Dua Lipa over her hit “Levitating,” Billboard’s No. 1 song of 2021, by a reggae band called Artikal Sound System. Though I doubt it was intentional, I can’t see a jury failing to notice the similarity.
Here’s “Levitating,” released on Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” album in 2020. According to the copyright, it took four people to write it.
And here’s “Live My Life,” released in 2017 by Artikal Sound System, a South Florida reggae band. It made it to No. 2 on the reggae chart, so it’s not as if it went totally unheard, and it’s simple enough that it might stick to the bottom of someone’s brain without him recalling years later where it came from.
