Chickenshit Cops Let Kids Die. They knew how dangerous the shooter was. Better to let mostly Latino kids die than risk their own lives doing their jobs:
The new details of how 18-year-old Salvador Ramos was able to kill 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Tex., on Tuesday, together with cellphone videos and witness accounts of police outside tackling or handcuffing desperate parents who tried to rush into the building, called into question earlier claims by Gov. Greg Abbott (R) that a “quick response” by law enforcement had saved lives.
Police who arrived at the school retreated when Ramos shot at them, state authorities said Thursday. An hour elapsed before a tactical unit led by federal Border Patrol agents went into a classroom and killed the gunman. The initial response appears to have veered from guidance, widely implemented since the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado, that says officers should pursue shooters inside buildings without waiting for specialized backup.
Here’s Why 18-Year-Olds Can Buy Assault Weapons, But Not Handguns, In Texas:
Under federal law, Americans buying handguns from licensed dealers must be at least 21, which would have precluded Salvador Ramos from buying that type of weapon. That trumps Texas law, which only requires buyers of any type of firearm to be 18 or older. Which reminds me–another would-be 18-year old mass murderer is stopped in Dallas.
Only six states — Florida, Washington, Vermont, California, Illinois and Hawaii — have increased the minimum purchase age for long guns to 21, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The majority did so following the 2018 massacre in Parkland, Florida, where a then-19-year-old assailant killed 17 people at a high school.
So. The US House and Senate could raise the age required to purchase long guns to 21. Or Texas could do it. They won’t. Maybe Delaware finally will. Personal to Rep. Kim Williams: It’s not about you.
The Real Reason The US Doesn’t Have Gun Control. It’s the fact that the composition of the US Senate cedes veto power to small and rural states:
That’s because gun control is one of many issues in which majority opinion in the nation runs into the brick wall of a Senate rule—the filibuster—that provides a veto over national policy to a minority of the states, most of them small, largely rural, preponderantly white, and dominated by Republicans.
Rethugs Commit Candidate Fraud In Michigan, Get Thrown Off Ballot:
Thursday’s debate came down to how much responsibility the candidates should bear for filing petitions that Bureau of Elections staff determined contained many thousands of signatures that were obviously forged, despite the fact that candidates are told to vet the signatures before filing.
Officials agreed that there are thousands of fraudulent signatures across 10 campaigns gathered by the same paid signature gatherers.
“This was not a mistake,” said Jonathan Brater of the Michigan Bureau of Elections. “This is not a mistake. They knew they were doing this; They did this deliberately, and our staff is confident in saying that these signatures should not be counted.”
