DL Open Thread Wednesday July 20 2022

Filed in National by on July 20, 2022

Here we are again.  You with your morning coffee probably thinking Jason330 is such a snappy writer and has such insightful insights, I’ll bet he has amazing Abs.

And it’s true, I do have amazing  pyramidalis, external obliques, internal obliques, and transversus abdominis.  To be honest, it is the first thing most people notice about me. But most people are shallow.  Not deep thinkers like you and me.

And it is your deep thinking I am depending on.  In today’s open thread, instead of a survey of today’s “news”  we will be constructing the optimal Democratic candidate from a bunch of spare parts called “One virtue from a Delaware political figure you like, and one virtue from a Delaware political figure you don’t.”

Then we’ll wait for lightning to strike and charge our Franken-candiate via their neck bolts.  But mark the rules well – one virtue from a Delaware political figure you like, and one virtue from a Delaware political figure you don’t. Adherence to rules makes the game fun for everyone.

I’ll start and take the lowest of low hanging fruit.

Bethany Hall-Long’s retail politics accumen & John Kowalko’s passion

I’ll leave it to you to guess which I favor and which I disfavor.

Trump is still calling Wisconsin officials demanding that they decertify the 2020 election:

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says former President Trump called him last week in another push to decertify Wisconsin’s 2020 presidential results after the WI Supreme Court ruling on absentee ballot drop boxes. Shortly after, Vos says, Trump posted on social media calling him a RINO.

    • Jason330 says:

Well that’s fucking crazy behavior from our once and future president.

      • Alby says:

I wouldn’t be so sure about the “future” part. I wouldn’t expect the national media to notice, but the GOP is in disarray.

Charisma is not transferable. If just one in 10 Trumpies won’t vote for DeSantis, the GOP can’t win. They don’t have the votes to spare. Indeed, only Trump has ever brought out the hayseed vote to this degree — if, in fact, those people actually turn out. I half suspect they rig the voting machines to manufacture that turnout, because why else would they be so sure the Democrats cheated?

        • puck says:

Republicans no longer need to win the popular vote to win the Electoral College. Their red-state legislatures and secretaries of state will nullify the vote and send Republican electors.

It would be nice if Trump and DeSantis split the MAGA vote leaving a Dem win too big to steal.

          • Ben says:

I think the ticket is Trump/DeSantis. Trump needs to at least pretend he won’t try to run again in 2028. It’ll be interesting to see if DeSantis challenges him on that.
Oh what’s that? The “Constitution” says he can’t? Lol. Cute

          • Alby says:

Can’t happen. Both are in Florida.

        • puck says:

          “the GOP is in disarray.”

Assuming the GOP takes the House, the Jan 6 hearings will be forgotten as Republicans re-array themselves around Biden impeachment hearings.

          • Alby says:

            Big assumption. Never assume.

          • Ben says:

Not an assumption. An educated and informed guess bassed on what one can see happening.

          • Alby says:

An educated and informed guess is still an assumption. Any prediction about the future is. If you think otherwise you’re kidding yourself under the guise of being realistic with yourself.

Yes, that might happen, but there are so many variables you couldn’t even accurately predict the odds of it happenings.

Stop pretending otherwise. Predicting disaster helps nobody. You won’t win a prize if you’re right. Nobody will even tell you how prescient you are, because millions believe the same thing.

          • Ben says:

Ok but I’ve been right so far lol.

          • Alby says:

Been right about what? You’ve been doomsaying all kinds of shit here for years. I’m not going to go through the archives but IIRC you merely predict the worst in all situations.

        • Ben says:

Hes absolutely going to be president again. ELECTED president…. 50/50.
It’s far too late to hold him accountable for 1/6. He has the money and judges to run out the clock on any trial (not that the DoJ seems to have any interest in bringing one) until he’s back in power
He’ll pardon all the 1/6 traitors and make them personal security.

          • Alby says:

What a waste of prognostication. If you’re so hot at predicting the future howzabout you prove it at Delaware Park?

          • Ben says:

Because I know the outcome. The house always wins.
Ignoring bad outcomes only sets you up for being unprepared when it happens.
Having clear eyes about the other side’s intentions (you can’t possibly be so disconnected that you don’t see the maga plan) is the best defense.

Maybe that’s not exactly how it’ll go down, but so far we’ve been moving steadily toward it.

          • Alby says:

So you can’t even admit that you’re just pulling turds out of your own ass? Do you think that by repeating the doomsaying of thousands of pundits — people who are at least being paid to produce that horseshit — you’re coming off as smart?

So what preparations have you made for what you’re so certain will happen? I don’t think it will happen but I’ve got my escape pod already prepared. How about you?

  2. puck says:

Bryan Townsend’s intellect and Colin Bonini’s message discipline.

    • meatball says:

      lol, low blow.

      • Jason330 says:

        Two very good ones though.

I’m on the edge of my seat to read what virtue John Carney brings to the table. I can’t think of a single one.

        • Stewball says:

Ol’ JC used to be good at growing a mustache.

        • Is ‘stolidity’ a virtue? Come to think of it, is it a word?

          • It IS (a word, not a virtue):

            Is stolidity a word?

Lack of emotion or interest: apathy, disinterest, impassivity, incuriosity, incuriousness, indifference, insensibility, insensibleness, lassitude, lethargy, listlessness, phlegm, stolidness, unconcern, uninterest, unresponsiveness.

As Larry King used to say, ‘Look up the word ‘stolidity’ in the dictionary, and you’ll see a picture of John Carney.’

  3. Oof says:

2015 Sean Matthews’ courage and 2022 Sean Matthews’ audacity

    • Good one. Although ‘mendacity’ might be a viable alternative.

If he continues down his current path, a WFP trained-and-endorsed candidate could give him problems in 2024.

      • Alby says:

Sure, power corrupts, but it’s kind of amazing how little power it takes to do the job.

        • I’ve shared this quote from a former co-worker before, but it holds true for the remaining sycophants in Dover. Think Darius Brown and Stephanie Bolden:

“It’s not that they sell out, it’s that they sell out so cheaply.”

          • mediawatch says:

Which brings to mind the wisdom of the late, great Rep. John Matushefske: (paraphrasing here) “If you receive the money before the vote, it’s a bribe; after the vote, it’s a campaign contribution.”

      • Joe Connor says:

I demand a refund of my cash and Volunteer time for Sean in ’14. I lived in a secure high-rise condo building then and I put his lit under the doors of 80 units:)!

  4. NascarDad says:

Darius Brown’s right hook, paired with Kowalko’s integrity.

going for a caped crusader kind of thing.

Alternately, could I get Chris Coons packaged in a Lauren Witzke’s body? If I have to watch someone simping for fascists every time i flip on cnn, I’d rather they’d be a little easier on the eyes

  5. Joe Connor says:

Darius Vs John Atkins at the old Smitty Mcgee’s in Fenwick at 1:00 AM on a Saturday night:)
