Song of the Day 10/24: Calum Scott, “Dancing on My Own,” Tiësto remix
MAGAts can rage against social change, but they’ve already lost the culture wars when a bunch of guys are dancing around, spraying each other with champagne, while singing the gay anthem “Dancing on My Own” — and the scene isn’t a Rehoboth Beach nightclub but a baseball clubhouse.
Baseball is a conservative sport, but there the Phillies were, celebrating their pennant-clinching victory by singing along to what the kidz apparently call a “sad banger” — a tale of woe set to a dance beat.
The team’s choice of celebratory song has created a bit of controversy — over their apparent preference for a cover version over the original. Written by Swedish diva Robyn, it was released in 2010 as the first single from “Body Talk Part I” and quickly became a club-culture classic, particularly among gays and lesbians. It seems an odd selection for a happy occasion — the singer has a masochistic compulsion to spy on her ex, similar to the Killers song “Mr. Brightside,” which predates it by several years.
For his “Britain’s Got Talent” audition in 2015, Calum Scott sang a stripped-down version that was remixed by Dutch DJ Tiësto the next year. That’s the version the Phillies use have been playing in their clubhouse all season long, which is why everyone knows the words.
In England, where people still express strong opinions about popular music, critics were cool to Calum’s cover, even though Robyn said she approved. They much preferred the original, and so do thousands of Robyn fans who took to Twitter last night to complain that the Phillies were practicing “Robyn erasure.”
Perfect SOTD choice. Somebody else said the music from “The Natural” played in his head when the home run sailed out. It was awesome.
Didn’t see this until today: Scott is up for performing his hit at Citizens Bank Park.
